About The Position

This is advanced performance, senior skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair and service of a variety of medium to heavy sized motor vehicles and equipment. Incumbent performs the most complex and specialized assignments to include troubleshooting, diagnosis, repairs, performs preventative maintenance and rebuild and/or replace parts or components which require advanced mechanical difficulty. Incumbent provides guidance and training to subordinate staff members and serves in a leadership role in the absence of Equipment Maintenance Division management. Work is performed independently under general supervision of the Garage Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent GED.
  • Three (3) years of experience/training in the mechanical field servicing, repairing and performing preventative maintenance on a variety of medium to heavy types of motorized vehicles, equipment, and fire and rescue apparatus with at least one (1) year performing full performance (journey-level) work in the inspection, maintenance, and repair of gasoline and diesel-heavy equipment
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Garage Supervisor in the daily operation of the Equipment Maintenance Facility overseeing the preventative maintenance program.
  • Maintains preventative maintenance records for the entire fleet.
  • Verifies that all parts and supplies needed to effect preventative maintenance procedures are either on hand or on order.
  • Performs the more complex and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of vehicles and equipment primarily within the medium to heavy categories, either in the shop or in the field.
  • Maintenance and repairs on diesel and gasoline engines, drive trains, computerized electronic ignition, fuel/emission systems, suspension and steering related components in both front and rear-wheel drive vehicles, air conditioning, heating and cooling systems, brake systems, and hydraulic systems.
  • Enters pertinent work order data into the “FA Suites” work data system.
  • Provides technical guidance and training to subordinate staff members to keep them abreast of new changes, techniques, repairs and procedures and requirements of vehicle maintenance.
  • Accurately enters labor hours, time, work orders and dates, utilizing the workstation keyboard.
  • Utilizes the most current computer-based diagnostic equipment and service manuals in the analysis of vehicle problems i.e., Texa-diesel diagnostic tool, Tech II (GMC), Pro-Link and refrigerant recovery machines to accurately diagnose vehicle faults.
  • Participates as an "essential" employee in the Department's Snow and Ice Control Program and other emergency or special activities.
