About The Position

DAWSON, a Native Hawaiian Organization (NHO)-owned business, is seeking a Senior Health & Safety Specialist to support a variety of environmental consulting projects for federal clients, including the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This position reports to the Director of Environmental Services and implements the safety program for multidisciplinary staff including scientists, planners, engineers, and project managers, in close collaboration with the Corporate Safety Director. This position is ideal for an experienced professional seeking a safety-focused role across diverse environmental disciplines in a growing, mission-driven consulting environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Engineering, Geology, Environmental Planning, or a related science/technical discipline.
  • Minimum of seven years of experience in a safety-oriented leadership role.
  • Proficiency with United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Engineering Manual (EM) 385-1-1.
  • Proficiency with OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standards, found in 29 CFR 1910.120.
  • Strong foundation in environmental principles, field methods, data analysis, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, federal environmental regulations and related agency guidelines.
  • Clear and concise writing skills for preparing technical memos, field reports, and sections of larger environmental documents.
  • Comfort working in outdoor environments, including remote or rugged field locations, and ability to follow field safety protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to follow established procedures.
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities, with willingness to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Eligibility to work on federal contracts, including the ability to pass background checks and meet security/access requirements for government facilities.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel as needed for fieldwork or site visits.
  • Motivation to learn, adapt, and develop professionally in a consulting environment.

  • Proficiency with USACE EM 381-1-97.

Responsibilities

  • Provide hands-on safety support to the Environmental Business Line, in coordination with Project and Program Managers performing Restoration (e.g., HTRW and Munitions) and Compliance (e.g., Cultural and Natural Resources, Planning, etc.).
  • Assist in coordinating project/work site health and safety training by identifying training needs and conducting or arranging for training.
  • Ensure that appropriate health and safety records are maintained (i.e., training, medical surveillance, competent person certifications, etc.).
  • Facilitate communication of work-related incident reports and investigations to the Corporate Safety Director.
  • Organize program- and project-level health and safety committees.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety awareness programs.
  • Author (or review/approve) Activity Hazard Analyses (AHAs), Site Safety and Health Plans (SSHPs) and/or Accident Prevention Plans (APPs).
  • Assist DAWSON office and project site leads in conducting and documenting periodic office, warehouse, and project site health and safety inspections, and closing out and documenting corrective actions taken.
  • Ensure mechanisms exist in the work site to identify, communicate, and correct employee health and safety concerns.
  • Administer the hazard communications program for the Environmental Business Line.
  • Function as a technical resource for all safety, loss control, and industrial hygiene issues.
  • Follow established protocols and quality standards, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project requirements and federal guidelines.
  • Support project coordination activities, including preparing meeting materials, assisting with scheduling, and communicating with team members.
  • Contribute to internal project organization, including file management, data entry, and maintaining project records in accordance with contract standards.
  • Provide general support to multidisciplinary teams, demonstrating professionalism, reliability, and a willingness to learn and take on new tasks.
  • Represent the Environmental Business Line as a Regional Health & Safety Coordinator (RHSC) on the Corporate Safety Committee and contribute to Corporate process and program improvements.
  • Provide regular summary reports to the Corporate Safety Director detailing safety issues and accomplishments within the Environmental Business Line.
