About The Position

The Senior Health Educator (SHE) is responsible for initiating, coordinating, and providing tobacco prevention and education activities throughout Miami-Dade County under the supervision of the Health Education Program Manager (HEPM). The SHE will assist the HEPM with the development and submission of the tobacco prevention work plan, focusing on preventing tobacco initiation among youth and young adults, promoting cessation, and reducing exposure to secondhand smoke. The SHE will serve as the coordinator for the youth prevention component, Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT), and will be responsible for maintaining the Miami Dade SWAT Chapter through support of its initiatives, clubs, activities, and promotion of youth empowerment. The SHE will work to recruit and support SWAT Advisors, clubs, and youth to maintain the establishment and operation of SWAT clubs in schools and community/faith-based settings in Miami Dade County. This includes ensuring compliance of SWAT advisors with agreements, processing quarterly deliverables for payment in a timely manner, maintaining membership rosters and records, conducting monthly check-ins with advisors, and performing quarterly site visits to established clubs. The role also involves training SWAT advisors and youth, coordinating Chapter meetings/trainings/events, and ensuring youth are trained and empowered with knowledge of tobacco issues, prevention, and advocacy skills. The SHE will collaborate with SWAT youth, advisors, local schools, and community/faith-based organizations to develop youth-specific trainings and events, and to plan and implement anti-tobacco and advocacy activities. Additionally, the SHE will assist in developing SWAT leaders through leadership skills training and related activities, and participate in or help coordinate local, regional, and statewide SWAT calls.

The position is also responsible for educating and working with the school district, community stakeholders, and youth on the K-12 initiative, providing data, and consulting with stakeholders and decision-makers on tobacco-related issues in the school system. The SHE will assist in developing new or revising existing tobacco-related policies, and aid in the creation and implementation of policy change. This includes conducting assessments of policy components achieved and creating materials to raise awareness about the benefits of a comprehensive tobacco-free school policy. Participation in meetings, trainings, and health promotion events related to the initiative is also required.

Furthermore, the SHE will assist the HEPM in preparing and facilitating meetings of the Consortium for a Healthier Miami Dade, ensuring alignment of Consortium programs with tobacco initiatives. This includes providing information and updating relevant websites on tobacco issues, supporting/facilitating meetings with the Youth and Young Adult subcommittee, and participating in Consortium activities by attending and assisting at events, meetings, and disseminating information to various committees and community partners.

The role involves collecting and analyzing data to ensure program outcomes, entering quarterly progress reports into the Automated Tobacco Activity Collection System (ATACS), and submitting regular reports as required to ensure progress on the work plan, agency objectives, and compliance with State Guidelines. The SHE will also provide written justification for procurement of services/products to promote tobacco prevention and education initiatives and serve as a chaperone for SWAT youth to required events, meetings, and trainings, which may involve transportation of youth and/or adult volunteers. The position requires promoting the Florida Quitline and referring community members to local tobacco cessation services. It also involves promoting empowerment of community partners by increasing their skills and knowledge of tobacco issues and prevention. The SHE will prepare and disseminate presentations, press releases, and other communication materials to communities through the Florida Department of Health in Miami Dade Office of Communication and Legislative Affairs, and collaborate with the HEPM in developing media campaigns and county-wide activities.

Finally, the SHE will represent the County Health Department and the tobacco prevention and control program on local committees, boards, and coalitions as assigned by the HEPM, and attend scheduled trainings as required. Local and regional travel may be necessary. The SHE will assure that tobacco prevention advocates receive training on effective tobacco prevention and control strategies and the program’s mission, goals, and objectives. Requirements

Responsibilities
