About The Position

The Senior Health and Safety Specialist, Construction supports the implementation, monitoring, and improvement of the Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) program, processes, and activities. This role is crucial in maintaining compliance, mitigating and managing health, safety, environmental, and security-related risks, and fostering a 'Safety Always' culture. The specialist will work closely with BGIS Project Management and Operations teams, providing governance and oversight for construction activities.

Requirements

  • College degree or equivalent experience.
  • Certification in one or more of the following: Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety, Certificate in Environmental Management through a Community College; or University degree in Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences.
  • Over 3 years of health and safety, and environmental work experience in General Construction/Construction Management.
  • Understand or demonstrate the ability to learn and become an expert in Quebec Health and Safety Laws and Regulations.
  • Understand or demonstrate the ability to learn and become an expert in Ontario Health and Safety Laws and Regulations.
  • Understand or demonstrate the ability to learn in other provincial HSE Laws and Regulations.
  • Understanding of environmental, health, and safety regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to pass security clearance requirements depending on the clients.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct project inspections to ensure compliance with regulations and BGIS internal processes/procedures.
  • Conduct HSE Incident Investigations alongside the Project Team.
  • Support the Project team to complete HSE start-up requirements, including proper notices, project-specific Health and Safety plans, compliance documents, and monitoring throughout the project.
  • Perform Project HSE site inspections.
  • Evaluate sub-contractors' HSE plans for compliance.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable legislation and fulfillment of contractual environmental, health, and safety requirements.
  • Assist in the investigation and resolution of incidents, including root-cause analysis, providing probable causes, and recommendations for resolution.
  • Assist in the identification and analysis of trends, communicating observations and providing suggestions for incident reduction measures.
  • Implement a Safety Always culture through a team approach.
  • Maintain all environmental, health, safety, and security-related data, including incident and compliance data, within applicable databases and other information storage systems.
  • Assist in the audit of compliance records and all other environmental, health, safety, and security data.
  • Prepare and distribute various environmental, health, safety, and security-related reports.
