Senior Hardware Engineer

General MotorsWarren, MI
Hybrid

About The Position

This role involves leading, executing, and coordinating analysis capability development initiatives, with a focus on development and validation virtualizations. The engineer will develop and translate DFMEAs into virtual analysis test cases, provide guidance on global regulatory compliance, and develop Bill of Process (BOP) and Bill of Equipment (BOE). Responsibilities include driving the architectural design of innovative Battery cells and controls solutions, leading battery charging techniques to recover sulfated batteries, and identifying gaps in vehicle prognostic health metrics for 12V batteries. The position requires providing technical expertise to release high-performance and reliable battery products, coordinating with lab specialists and vehicle technical leads, and documenting lessons learned on battery failure modes. The role also supports cross-functional work to develop robust charge strategies, leads battery supplier manufacturing initiatives, conducts battery teardowns for defect documentation, and optimizes battery tester algorithms. The work policy is hybrid, requiring 3 days in-office and 2 days remote, with the ability to report to a local office.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or related field of study and Seven (7) years of experience as a Product Engineer, Battery Development Engineer, Control Engineer, or related occupation.
  • Alternatively, a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering or related field of study and Five (5) years of experience as a Product Engineer, Battery Development Engineer, Control Engineer, or related occupation.
  • Five (5) years of experience with: Automotive Electric Power and Low Voltage Batteries; Batteries, Electric Power, Battery Management and Vehicle Integration; Battery product and process knowledge including automotive manufacturing and supplier battery plants; Battery teardown analysis, root causing and development of countermeasures; Dealership/plant battery testing tools to guide appropriate improvements that lead to reduced battery warranty and associated costs; Big Data Analytics - End to end analysis of battery information from installation in the vehicle, through logistics and dealership into customer hands to pinpoint issues and develop countermeasures.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, execute, and coordinate analysis capability development initiatives, with emphasis on development and validation virtualizations.
  • Develop and translate DFMEAs into virtual analysis test cases.
  • Provide guidance on global regulatory compliance and develop Bill of Process (BOP) and Bill of Equipment (BOE) including lessons learned feedback and program deviation evaluations.
  • Drive the architectural design of innovative Battery cells and controls solutions, leveraging cutting-edge technologies to meet industry standards and exceed customer expectations.
  • Lead and coordinate battery charging techniques to recover battery from sulfated band to useable state to meet vehicle functional and performance objectives.
  • Identify gaps in existing vehicle prognostic health metrics for 12V battery and improve prognostic battery detection to prevent battery diagnostic test at dealerships.
  • Provide technical expertise to lead DREs to release high performance and reliable battery products.
  • Coordinate with lab specialists and vehicle technical leads to focus on product growth to meet and exceed vehicle functional needs.
  • Document and communicate lessons learned on battery failure modes at Global subsystem leadership team meetings to share information on battery safe operating characteristics to prevent thermal venting and affect reliability of part.
  • Supported cross functional work to develop robust charge strategy for battery to charge in vehicle to cycle in a healthy SOC state.
  • Lead battery supplier manufacturing initiative to reduce incidents due to supplier process defects.
  • Lead battery teardowns at third party site to document defects for warranty returned batteries.
  • Lead and optimize battery tester algorithms within dealership diagnostic tools to reduce no trouble founds and prevent customer repeat visits for a compromised battery.
