About The Position

Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB) is seeking a Senior Geotechnical Engineer for their Calgary, Alberta office. This role involves working on a variety of mining-related projects, focusing on the design, monitoring, and assessment of water and tailings dams. The engineer will have the opportunity to collaborate with an internationally recognized team on diverse projects including mine infrastructure and tailings facility designs, hydro-electric and water storage dam designs and assessments, geohazard assessments, transportation engineering, and seismic assessments. The position offers the chance to work on large dam projects, develop practical solutions through detailed analysis, manage projects from conception to completion, and build strong client relationships. Travel within Canada and internationally for business development and site visits is also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Registered or eligible to register as a Professional Engineer in Canada.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum of 10 years’ experience, OR a Master’s Degree / PhD in Civil and/or Geotechnical Engineering / Soil Mechanics / Engineering Geology with a minimum of 8 years’ experience.
  • Strong background in geotechnical design and use of geotechnical analysis software, ideally with a focus on dams, embankments and slopes, CPTu interpretation and/or geotechnical laboratory testing.
  • Demonstrated leadership, project management, decision-making and coaching skills.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills including experience in writing proposals, technical reports and general project correspondence.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to develop and grow relationships with a variety of clients.

  • Experience with mine tailing's facility design, geotechnical numerical modeling, critical state theory and/or seismic hazard analysis.

Responsibilities

  • Work on large dam project portfolio, designing practical solutions for challenging conditions.
  • Develop practical solutions based on detailed assessments and analyses and defend solutions to clients and third-party review panels.
  • Manage and lead projects including the development, review and approvals of technical specifications, drawings and design reports and tender packages for major tailings dams, mine waste facilities, containment facilities and mine infrastructure projects.
  • Provide input and prepare conceptual to detailed engineering designs, engineering studies, feasibility studies and condition assessments.
  • Work closely with clients from concept design through to construction, commissioning and operational stages of the project lifecycle.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships and work continually to develop and grow the business.
  • Travel within Canada and to various international project locations for business development, and to conduct site visits, site inspections and audits.
