Senior Geologist - Subsurface Risk Team

Diamondback Energy•Midland, TX

About The Position

The Senior Geologist will join the Corporate Subsurface Risk Team as an individual contributor on the Subsurface Injection Team. Working closely with geologists, reservoir engineers, and geophysicists, the role supports asset and operations teams across the organization. The successful candidate brings together geological, geophysical, and engineering data to quantify and manage operational risks throughout the lifecycle of subsurface development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Geosciences, Geophysics, Engineering Geology, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience as a geoscientist in oil and gas, injection, or a related subsurface field.
  • Experience integrating geologic, geophysical, and engineering data into practical risk assessments or recommendations, and explaining technical risk clearly to engineers, operations staff, leadership, and regulators.
  • Working knowledge of pore pressure, wellbore stability, and basic geomechanics, with experience in injection reservoir characterization or pressure modeling.
  • Experience with regulatory frameworks in the Permian or other basins with injection operations.
  • Ability to work occasionally flexible hours, overtime, weekends, and holidays to support active operations.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in Geology, Geophysics, or a related geoscience discipline.
  • Experience in regional mapping, log interpretation, and subsurface data management using interpretation software; IHS Kingdom/Petra or Petrel experience is strongly preferred.
  • Working knowledge of operations geology, drilling operations, structural geology, pore pressure, and in-situ stress as they relate to subsurface and operational hazards.
  • Proficiency in Snowflake, Spotfire, Python, or other coding tools for data analysis and workflow automation.
  • Strong organization and time-management skills to balance real-time operations support with longer-term mapping projects.

Responsibilities

  • Build and maintain subsurface risk assessments for development AFEs, pre-drill, pre-frac, and operational assessments.
  • Lead geological support for production and workover teams.
  • Perform detailed well-log correlation and stratigraphic picks to keep the regional framework accurate and current.
  • Use geological and engineering data to assess shallow hazards and pressure risk.
  • Help assess and interpret injection datasets in the Permian Basin and develop tools and workflows to integrate datasets for regional mapping.
  • Collaborate with operations and asset teams using multidisciplinary subsurface interpretation techniques.
  • Support regulatory and midstream partners with permitting, protest workflows, and regulatory data submissions.
  • Recommend and justify subsurface data acquisition programs and projects.
  • Work with geotechnical staff and the data science team on predictive tools, risk maps, and workflows that integrate stratigraphic, structural, and geomechanical data.
  • Support midstream partners in understanding subsurface conditions that affect disposal capacity and field operations.
