Senior Full Stack Software Engineer - Operations Application Development

BLUE ORIGIN•Huntsville, AL
•$197,529 - $276,540

About The Position

Blue Origin’s Operations Application Development team builds full stack applications and automations supporting Material Planning, Production Control, Manufacturing, Quality, Safety, and Test Operations across Blue Origin facilities. The team develops tools and workflows that support the building and testing of spaceflight hardware, including event-driven actions triggered by engineering updates, material requirements planning automation and the Material Planning Hub, and an Out of Tolerance tool for Quality reviews. The Senior Full Stack Software Engineer leads large-scale engineering projects from design through production, contributes across the full stack, and mentors junior engineers. The role involves extensive hands-on AWS and Terraform work, using TypeScript, React, Java, and C# to build applications, services, APIs, and integrations. The team is moving scheduled jobs toward event-driven workflows and incrementally evolving a legacy monolith into microservices using AWS Lambda. The engineer will help shape architecture and make practical decisions about reliability, performance, and maintainability. Agentic coding is a core part of the role. The engineer will use tools such as Codex and Claude Code extensively in daily development, validate generated code, and help advance the team’s coding-agent practices. Applicants must meet the stated U.S. citizenship or immigration-status eligibility requirement. Relocation is provided. The interview process includes a technical exercise.

Requirements

  • Extensive hands-on experience designing, deploying, and operating production applications on AWS, including AWS Lambda and services for messaging, event routing, and monitoring.
  • Deep knowledge of Terraform and hands-on experience writing, editing, and reviewing infrastructure as code to provision and manage production AWS resources.
  • Hands-on experience writing, editing, reviewing, and troubleshooting CI/CD deployment pipelines, with a strong understanding of continuous deployment practices, automated testing, deployment validation, and rollback strategies.
  • Proficiency using agentic coding tools such as Codex and Claude Code, including defining tasks, guiding execution, and reviewing and testing generated code.
  • Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including deploying and supporting software in production.
  • Production development experience with TypeScript, Java, and C#.
  • Demonstrated full stack experience building web interfaces with React or a similar framework, backend services, APIs, and database integrations.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive complex engineering projects, make technical decisions, and coordinate delivery across teams.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers and helping them build technical skills and sound engineering judgment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including explaining complex systems to technical and nontechnical audiences.
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, a U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong systems thinking and systems design experience, including reasoning about performance, resource constraints, concurrency, and failure behavior across an entire system.
  • Experience designing and operating distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and microservices, including migrating scheduled workflows or decomposing a monolith.
  • Systems programming experience with C, C++, or Rust; these languages are not required for day-to-day development in this role.
  • Experience with React and TypeScript applications built with Vite or Next.js.
  • Advanced experience with relational database schema design and query performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead large-scale software projects from requirements and system design through implementation, rollout, and production support, coordinating technical work and dependencies across teams.
  • Use agentic coding tools such as Codex and Claude Code to implement features, refactor services, write tests, and troubleshoot issues, while reviewing and validating the resulting code.
  • Advance agentic coding practices by developing reusable workflows, evaluating tools, and coaching engineers in effective use of coding agents.
  • Design event-driven workflows to replace scheduled jobs and guide incremental migration of a legacy monolith to microservices using AWS Lambda.
  • Write, edit, and review Terraform configurations to provision and manage AWS infrastructure.
  • Build and maintain full stack applications using TypeScript, Java, and C#, including React interfaces, backend services, APIs, and data integrations.
  • Apply systems thinking to service boundaries, data flows, and failure modes, accounting for retries, idempotency, and consistency in distributed workflows.
  • Partner with operations stakeholders to understand manufacturing workflows and translate business needs into usable applications and reliable automations.
  • Design and integrate REST APIs and database schemas for operational applications.
  • Mentor and develop junior engineers through pairing, code and design reviews, regular feedback, and opportunities for greater technical ownership.
  • Deliver maintainable, tested software with monitoring and documentation to support reliable production operations.
  • Communicate architectural decisions, technical tradeoffs, project progress, and risks clearly to engineers and business partners.

Benefits

  • Relocation provided.
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Basic and supplemental life insurance.
  • Paid parental leave.
  • Short- and long-term disability.
  • 401(k) with company match of up to 5%.
  • Education Support Program.
  • Stock options for all regular employees working at least 20 hours per week.
  • Paid time off of up to four weeks per year based on weekly scheduled hours.
  • Up to 14 company-paid holidays.
  • Depending on role type and job level, employees may be eligible for benefits and bonuses based on company discretion.
