About The Position

The Senior Financial Assistance Specialist is primarily responsible for helping patients navigate the financial aspects of their healthcare by screening patients to determine potential Medicaid, UAMS Financial Assistance and/or other program eligibility and subsequent completion of applications with the patient and family. Maintains knowledge of community agencies and resources to facilitate appropriate referrals and identification of payment sponsorship.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, business or related PLUS three (3) years of experience in healthcare revenue cycle or revenue cycle related function OR High School Diploma/GED PLUS seven (7) years of experience in healthcare in a revenue cycle related function or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish.
  • Knowledge of Medicaid categories, DHS, polices and processes.
  • Ability to analyze financial data to calculate payment obligations.
  • Problem solving skills, critical thinking skills, and ability to multi-task.
  • Meticulousness in filling out forms, verifying coverage, and documenting in patient management software.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to discuss sensitive financial matters with patients during stressful situations.
  • Competence in using Electronic Medical Records (EMR) systems (e.g., Epic, Workday) and Microsoft Office.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate's degree with 4 years in finance, accounting, healthcare, business or related field.
  • HFMA CRCR certification.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze patient financial situation, family size and income to determine eligibility for financial assistance or government programs like Medicaid.
  • Explain institutional policies and state regulations as they relate to financial assistance and Medicaid eligibility.
  • Facilitate the timely completion of applications by assisting patients through complex forms for financial assistance and Medicaid programs, often working directly with government agencies.
  • Process applications for charity discounts within the UAMS Financial Assistance Policy guidelines. This involves the review of patient financial information, determining that all required information is received and determines eligibility for the program.
  • Key Medicaid cases into the DHS eligibility system.
  • Retrieve Medicaid eligibility information from different databases.
  • Discuss alternative payment options with patients who present as self-pay but are deemed ineligible for assistance programs.
  • Manage assigned financial assistance and Medicaid work queues efficiently, ensuring timely and accurate completion and follow-up.
  • Maintain accurate documentation within the electronic health record and related systems to support reporting, audit readiness, and program transparency.

  • Develop and maintain knowledge-base of Medicaid policies and procedures, maintains knowledge of all federal and state regulatory mandates and requirements.
