About The Position

The Senior Financial Accountant position at the City of Tucson’s Business Services Department performs a full range of city-wide accounting and reporting duties for the assigned funds, such as proprietary and fiduciary funds prepared in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for the City’s Annual Comprehensive Financial Report (ACFR). This position ensures the integrity of the accounting information by recording, verifying, consolidating, and entering transactions. Work is performed under the supervision of the financial manager. This position leads and instructs the daily operational work of accounting personnel.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree on a related field

  • Experience in creating and managing worksheets, preferred knowledge with Microsoft Office Product: Excel.
  • Experience in grant financial management.
  • Experience working with ERP systems, including Workday, Advantage, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares, analyzes and submits monthly, quarterly and annual financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) for management review using the City’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system, tenant and landlord ledger systems, bookkeeping system and Microsoft Excel. Maintains compliance with the city, state and federal regulations.
  • Ensures the integrity of accounting information through review and reconciliation of accounting and financial transactions. Verifies, consolidates, and enters corrected transactions within the system. Prepares and records asset, liability, revenue, and expense entries by compiling and analyzing account information using City’s systems and software.
  • Enters grant revenues and expenses into current systems, including Quick Books system. Performs variance analysis and analyzes city-wide trends to ensure the accuracy of financial data, as well as budget-to-actual variances.
  • Assists in the preparation and compilation of supporting audit documents for fiscal year-end financial audit using City’s ERP system or other software. Works with auditors to complete external audits for all payroll, expense, revenue, balance sheet reports by analyzing and preparing supporting audit documents Responds to auditor questions via email, during meetings or by providing supporting documents.
  • Assists supervisor with leading tasks as needed. Provides system support to lower-level staff. Provides guidance on technical accounting issues and ensuring accuracy in their work. Cross-trains to provide backup support for staff.
  • Acts as liaison with internal and external stakeholders on city-wide accounting issues as well as communication with customer departments. Aids in reviewing and researching information as needed.
