About The Position

This program is designed for senior nursing students who will be entering their final year of study. The role involves performing basic supportive care to patients and families under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Care Manager. Externs will collect, document, and report patient data, but will not interpret it. The position requires providing age-appropriate care and service for pediatric patients from birth to 21 years, and selected adults. The program includes hybrid orientation, unit shifts, workshops, and a graduation ceremony. Successful participants may receive financial assistance for an NCLEX Prep Course if hired as an RN.

Requirements

  • Must be an incoming senior nursing student from an ACEN, CCNE, CNEA accredited program.
  • GPA must be 3.0 or higher.
  • Unofficial transcript required.
  • Must be able to work a minimum of 16 or 24 hrs/week based on unit preference.
  • Must be able to attend all program dates.
  • Current CPR (BLS for Healthcare Provider), required.
  • Sound written and verbal communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated basic computer skills.
  • Displays a positive presence and interacts with all levels of staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of pediatric clinical prior to Fall 2026 preferred.
  • Baccalaureate degree preferred.
  • Two clinical instructor references required and will be collected via Skill Survey.

Responsibilities

  • Performs basic supportive care to specified patients and families under the direction and supervision of an RN or Care Manager.
  • Collects, documents, and reports data to the RN Care Manager.
  • Provides age-appropriate care and service for pediatric patients from birth to 21 years, and selected adults.
  • Provides care using a Family Centered approach.
  • Provides basic supportive care pertaining to nutrition, mobility, and elimination.
  • Utilizes Therapeutic Communication while monitoring the physical, psychological and social needs of patients and families.
  • Remains compliant with HIPAA, maintains professionalism and ensures confidentiality of patient information.
  • Collects, documents, and reports vital signs such as: Temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure or mean arterial pressure, heights, and weights.
  • Completes screening questions and documents all items into the electronic health record.
  • Promotes general patient safety and performs minor specimen collection and testing.
  • Holds, positions patients and assists with procedures.
  • Preps all materials and supplies as needed.
  • Documents according to organizational standards, policies and procedures.
  • Identifies learning needs and participates in educational activities as appropriate.

Benefits

  • Base pay $19.10/hr plus applicable shift differentials.
