About The Position

This position will operate vehicles and a variety of large equipment, while performing minor maintenance on the state roadways. Requirements

Requires two years of experience in operating small/medium equipment and vehicles
A Class “B” CDL with air brakes is required at time of hire
Obtain a CDL Class "A" Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to the position and obtain a CDL Class "A" license within 10 months of appointment to the position
Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) - Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it
The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates
Employee will be required to be responsive to emergency situations within a very short timeframe and serve in the Transportation Emergency Management Team (TEMT)

Must be United States (U.S.) citizens or lawfully authorized alien workers.
A valid Class B driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
Applicants must register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a pre-employment query.
Male applicants born on or after October 1, 1962, will not be eligible for hire or promotion in the Career Service, or appointment in the Selected Exempt Service (SES) or Senior Management Service (SMS), unless they are registered with the Selective Service System (SSS) before their 26th birthday, or have a Letter of Registration Exemption from the SSS.

Responsibilities

Operates vehicles and a variety of large equipment to include, but not limited to, sewer cleaner and hydraulic excavators in bridge and roadway maintenance.
Performs minor maintenance and servicing work in connection with any type of equipment operated including but not limited to: check and add fluids, checks/adjusts brakes, maintains proper air pressure in all tires, etc.
Assists in the repair of operated equipment.
Cleans and washes equipment.
Supervises Department of Corrections inmates crew performing maintenance activities.
Oversees crews performing maintenance activities.
Coordinates, participates, and directs the maintenance activity of the assigned crew.
Assists in selecting materials, supplies, equipment, inspecting, planning workloads, workflows, deadlines, work objectives and time utilization with employees.
Maintains records of operation.
Prepares and maintains daily paperwork such as crew activity reports and daily vehicle check lists.
Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments.
Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assists in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
Trains crew members in the operation of heavy equipment and of basic Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).
Assists with crew activity reports as needed.
