About The Position

This position provides strategic direction, oversight, and spending accountability for the Company’s environmental remediation projects. This role includes supporting and directing work of the remediation team members, as well as direct management of remediation projects. The remediation projects are in various stages of maturity, and the ideal candidate will be able to provide both thoughtful strategic direction for developing projects and tactical advice for the ongoing management and execution of existing remedial activities. This position will be responsible for the annual update of the environmental liability estimate; reviewing and updating Asset Retirement Obligations for the Company facilities; and tracking environmental financial assurance obligations. This role will also participate in the Company’s environmental assessment program as requested and provide technical assistance to facilities on environmental matters as needed. To be successful, this individual must have experience in environmental remediation with demonstrated people and project management skills. Strategic planning and communication skills (written and verbal) are essential to discuss issues and potential solutions with team members, company leadership, stakeholder groups, and regulatory agencies.

Requirements

  • Prior leadership experience with managing technical staff and consultants.
  • At least 8 years of work experience in mining and/or industrial environmental remediation.
  • Direct experience working on projects managed under the CERCLA program.
  • Experience with preparing environmental liability estimates and ARO in accordance with US GAAP guidance and ASTM standards.
  • Must have demonstrated project management skills, such as detailed project scoping, developing budgets, tracking expenditures, communication of project status to stakeholders, and on-time completion of assignments.
  • Must be able to work professionally with all levels of Company personnel, regulatory agencies, special interest groups, and members of the public.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the leader for the Company’s remediation team, including providing technical guidance, strategic direction, and career mentoring.
  • Manage individual remediation projects, as required.
  • Review ongoing remediation spending and update annual remediation forecast and report any material changes to forecast to the Central Finance team on a quarterly basis.
  • Coordinate with remediation team and Central Finance team members to prepare the Company’s annual environmental liability estimate, including preparation of individual project estimates in accordance with US GAAP guidance, detailed review of the estimate, and supporting third-party auditing as needed.
  • Prepare the Company’s Asset Retirement Obligation (ARO) estimate in accordance with ASTM guidance.
  • Track and report on the Company’s environmental financial assurance obligations and bonding capacity and communicate Company position to senior leadership.
