Senior Environmental Planner

Dillon Consulting LimitedVancouver, BC
CA$110,000 - CA$150,000Hybrid

About The Position

We are currently seeking a Senior Environmental Planner to join our Environmental Planning team. Our team specializes in managing comprehensive environmental approvals from planning through construction, leveraging innovative engagement tools and deep regulatory knowledge to streamline project delivery. This is a new position and is based at our Vancouver office. We offer flexible work hours and hybrid work arrangement options to help balance the competing demands of work and personal life. We are interested in planners from across the profession; not only from one sector or type of assessment. Your background may be in infrastructure, energy, utilities, municipal services, resources, industry, government, environmental approvals or another area of environmental planning. What matters most is the perspective, entrepreneurial mindset, and initiative you can bring. We are looking for planners with the judgment to deliver complex work, the curiosity to question established approaches and the entrepreneurial drive to turn good ideas into better outcomes for clients, communities and the environment. The role will be calibrated to your experience. Intermediate planners will have room to take on more complex assignments, increase their client exposure and grow into leadership. Senior planners will have opportunities to lead major work, build client relationships, mentor others and influence the direction of the discipline. This is not an unstructured role, and you will not be expected to build alone. You will have clear responsibilities, experienced colleagues and an established platform along with genuine room to test ideas, improve how we work and help create new opportunities.

Requirements

  • A university degree or post-graduate college diploma in planning, environmental studies, biology or a related field.
  • Relevant professional experience, typically 5+ years for an intermediate role or 10+ years for a senior role, preferably in consulting or a comparable client, government or industry environment.
  • Experience delivering Environmental Assessments, impact assessments, planning studies, permitting and approvals, or related environmental assignments as a project manager, environmental lead or key project team member, at a level appropriate to your experience.
  • A strong working knowledge of the legislation, regulations, policies, guidelines, permitting processes and approval requirements relevant to your areas of practice.
  • Experience designing or delivering stakeholder, public and Indigenous Community engagement programs, including virtual or technology-enabled engagement approaches.
  • Experience with business development, client development and responses to RFPs is expected for senior candidates and considered an asset for intermediate candidates.
  • Experience with environmental management during construction, including environmental management plans, monitoring and documentation—is considered an asset.
  • Prospective employees are expected to fully align with Dillon's core commitment to Health & Safety. This includes active, ongoing engagement with our Health & Safety processes and platform, and the active, ongoing identification and reporting of health and safety hazards.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with business development, client development and responses to RFPs is expected for senior candidates and considered an asset for intermediate candidates.
  • Experience with environmental management during construction, including environmental management plans, monitoring and documentation—is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage or play a key role in Environmental Assessments and impact assessments, environmental planning, permitting and approvals, and environmental compliance assignments for public- and private-sector clients.
  • Bring together planning, engineering, environmental science and engagement perspectives to help clients make clear, defensible decisions.
  • Manage project scope, schedule, budget, quality and risk at a level appropriate to your experience.
  • Contribute to complex projects that shape infrastructure, communities, resource development and environmental outcomes across a range of sectors.
  • Understand what clients are trying to achieve, not just what is written in the scope, and help translate those needs into practical solutions.
  • Contribute to client communications, market intelligence, proposals, interviews and business development activities.
  • For senior candidates, help identify and pursue strategic opportunities, strengthen key accounts and shape areas of discipline growth.
  • Question established approaches constructively and propose better ways to solve problems, engage communities, manage information and communicate decisions.
  • Develop, test or champion new methods, tools and technology-enabled approaches where they improve quality, efficiency, transparency or the client experience.
  • Turn project lessons into reusable practices that make the next assignment stronger.
  • Collaborate generously across disciplines and offices, sharing ideas and creating space for others to contribute.
  • Contribution to the career development of less tenured staff, including technical direction, training recommendations, coaching, and mentoring.
  • Continue your own development with support from respected leaders in environmental assessment, planning, permitting, engagement and compliance across Canada.
  • Contribute to Dillon’s profile through professional associations, committees, publications, presentations or industry conversations.
