Within the context of a patient/client and family-centred framework and continuum-based care model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice and the vision, values and policies of the organization, the position performs supervisory, regulatory and inspectional work while promoting/maintaining a high standard of public health in assigned areas of the health authority. Requirements

  • University graduation, preferably at the Master’s level, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • At least five (5) years’ related experience as an Environmental Health Officer II (EHO 2).
  • Must be certified as a Public Health Inspector in Canada. (CPHI(C))
  • Must possess a valid BC Driver’s License as travel within Vancouver Coastal Health requires the use of a personal vehicle.
  • Thorough knowledge of modern methods, principles, techniques and practices of public health sanitation as applied to the inspection of building and places of business.
  • Thorough knowledge of the by-laws and other governmental regulations pertaining to public health sanitation.
  • Working knowledge of the basic sciences in relation to environmental sanitation.
  • Ability to interpret laws and regulations governing public sanitation and to apply them practically in various and sometimes complex situations.
  • Ability to advise EHO’s on difficult problems and to supervise effectively.
  • Ability to secure facts through investigation, inspection and surveys.
  • Ability to use impartiality, good judgment and discretion in the enforcement of regulations.
  • Ability to gather factual evidence for legal prosecutions and to present it clearly and effectively during court hearings.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and maintaining collaborative working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability utilizing a variety of problem solving strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and in collaborating for community interaction.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver in-service education sessions to both individuals and groups.
  • Ability to adapt to the changing health system and demonstrate an understanding of the broad determinants of health.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • General knowledge of Trauma Informed Practice and Harm Reduction approaches and Strengths-based care.
  • Demonstrated ability to promote Indigenous Cultural Safety.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide competent and culturally safe care in a variety of settings and with diverse populations.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Performs supervisory, regulatory and inspectional work while promoting/maintaining a high standard of public health in assigned areas of the health authority.
