About The Position

Bolton & Menk has an exciting opportunity for a Senior SUE Engineering Technician to join our Emerging Markets & Services team. As a Top Workplace, this position offers the opportunity to work with a growing Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) practice that supports transportation, municipal, water, and land development projects throughout the United States. The SUE Engineering Technician plays a critical role in civil engineering projects by translating raw field data into highly accurate underground utility maps. This position provides the opportunity to work both in the field and the office while collaborating with survey, engineering, GIS, and construction professionals across the company.

Requirements

  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Surveying Technology, GIS, Construction Technology, or a related field preferred; or equivalent experience
  • 5 or more years of experience in subsurface utility engineering, surveying, civil engineering support, or related technical services
  • 3 or more years of experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, MicroStation, GIS software, or similar platforms
  • Knowledge of ASCE 38 standards and utility quality levels
  • Strong understanding of underground utility infrastructure including water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, electric, gas, and telecommunications systems
  • Ability to interpret utility records, engineering plans, and construction drawings
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites as needed
  • Individuals must be legally authorized to work in the US at the start of employment without a need for current or future visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Processing field notes, electronic data, and historical records to create 3D digital utility drawings.
  • Developing precise utility layouts, profiles, and cross-sections using AutoCAD Civil 3D and/or Bentley MicroStation.
  • Translating field designating data, vacuum excavation (test hole) logs, survey points, and municipal as-built drawings into digital project files.
  • Identifying and highlighting spatial conflicts between existing underground utilities and proposed infrastructure designs.
  • Reviewing digital files for accuracy and completeness, ensuring adherence to ASCE 38 (Standard Guidelines for Investigating and Documenting Existing Utilities) and client-specific CAD standards.
  • Creating permit sketches, cross-section drawings, and test-hole reports for project managers and clients.
  • Communicating daily with SUE field crews, professional surveyors, and project engineers to resolve data discrepancies.
