About The Position

At Remitly, the Senior Engineering Manager for Global Transfer Flow leads the engineers responsible for the customer experience used to prepare and submit money transfers, including recipient and payment selection, transfer submission, and the supporting APIs and backend coordination. The manager shapes the team’s multi-year technical strategy and leads modernization from duplicated regional logic and tightly coupled interfaces toward a shared, configurable platform that supports market-specific requirements and enables new experiences. The platform will support remittances and may extend to small business payments, lending, stored balances, and channels such as WhatsApp and conversational AI. The role also champions effective and responsible use of AI in engineering while maintaining the accuracy, security, and reliability expected in financial services. The position owns team development, architecture, delivery, staffing, and quarterly planning, while partnering with Product, Design, Analytics, infrastructure, domain teams, and engineering leaders.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of software engineering experience, including technical leadership of full-stack systems, API design, and client-server interactions.
  • 5+ years of recent experience hiring and managing engineering teams, including coaching and performance management.
  • Experience leading architecture changes in a large codebase shared by multiple teams, such as separating tightly coupled components, introducing configuration-driven workflows, or moving business logic to backend services.
  • Expertise in a backend or full-stack language such as Go, Kotlin, Java, or TypeScript.
  • Experience building secure, scalable systems using cloud infrastructure such as AWS.
  • Sound judgment in applying AI to software development and helping teams adopt AI tools safely and effectively.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional experience.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience applying AI to product features.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Experience with mobile and web architecture, including React Native or React, server-driven user interfaces, or workflow orchestration.
  • Experience building software development kits, frameworks, or internal platforms used by other engineering teams.
  • Experience in payments, fintech, or another regulated industry where customers rely on accurate, secure services.
  • Experience running experiments at scale using A/B tests and feature flags.

Responsibilities

  • Hire, coach, and develop engineers; set expectations, manage performance, and build a team that reflects Remitly’s values.
  • Own technical strategy and lead complex architecture changes across teams.
  • Modernize transfer APIs and data models so customers can provide information in different sequences, with consistent validation in backend services.
  • Guide the move from separate regional implementations to configurable workflows, with backend services managing progress and determining the next step across mobile, web, conversational, and partner experiences.
  • Partner with infrastructure and domain teams to build reusable components and development tools for other teams.
  • Improve reliability through monitoring, automated testing, and simulations that help engineering, quality assurance, and product teams identify issues before release.
  • Work with Product, Design, and Analytics to set priorities and measurable goals, including faster transfer submission, lower latency, and faster experimentation.
  • Own delivery, staffing, and quarterly planning; coordinate dependencies, clarify ownership, and resolve priorities with partner teams and engineering leaders.
  • Champion responsible use of AI coding tools to improve productivity, including generating workflow code from structured specifications with appropriate review and validation.
