About The Position

The Senior Engineering Manager is responsible for translating company strategy into effective engineering execution. This role ensures strong technical rigor, predictable delivery, disciplined resource management, and a healthy engineering culture while developing mid-level managers and technical leaders. Armtec Defense Technologies (Armtec) is an operating unit of the Transdigm Group (NYSE: TDG), an industry leader in aerospace and defense products and services. Armtec is comprised of three business units producing subcomponents for ordnance in Coachella, CA; decoy countermeasure flares in Camden AR; and radar countermeasure chaff in Lillington NC. This position is staffed in Coachella, at Armtec’s world-class, sole-source production facility for felted fiber nitrocellulose combustible cartridge cases for medium and large caliber military ammunition; and pyrophoric payloads for training grenades.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in the field of Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or other relevant field is required.
  • 12+ years of engineering experience in production or defense industries.
  • Strong foundation in engineering theory and practice, with the ability to apply first principles, data-driven analysis, and sound technical judgment to guide design decisions, troubleshoot complex problems, and challenge assumptions across multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Proven people and execution leadership, including experience managing managers, setting clear priorities and accountability, communicating status and risks effectively to leadership, and consistently delivering results through delegation and team development.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Eligible for any required authorization from the U.S. Government to conform to U.S. export control regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure engineering projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to quality requirements.
  • Translate strategic objectives into clear priorities, milestones, and execution plans.
  • Identify risks early and drive mitigation before they impact cost, schedule, or performance.
  • Set standards for sound engineering practice.
  • Ensure designs, processes, and changes meet internal, customer, and regulatory requirements.
  • Promote data-driven decision making and continuous technical improvement.
  • Lead and develop engineering managers and technical staff.
  • Create clarity around roles, expectations, and accountability.
  • Build trust, psychological safety, and professional respect across the engineering organization.
  • Clearly communicate status, risks, and priorities to executive leadership and cross-functional partners.
  • Ensure leadership has timely, accurate visibility into engineering performance and issues.
  • Represent engineering effectively in cross-functional and customer-facing discussions.
  • Manage engineering staffing, workload balance, and prioritization to maximize impact.
  • Make tradeoff decisions when resources are constrained and escalate appropriately.
  • Ensure effective use of budget, tools, and engineering assets.
  • Establish and use KPIs to monitor productivity, quality, and delivery performance.
  • Improve engineering workflows, review, and governance to increase predictability and efficiency.
  • Ensure lessons learned are captured and applied across teams.
  • Attract, retain, and develop high-performing engineering talent.
  • Conduct performance reviews and create meaningful development plans.
  • Build bench strength for future technical and leadership roles.
