Senior Engineering Manager, API Catalog

PostmanSan Francisco, CA
Onsite

About The Position

Postman is seeking a Senior Engineering Manager to lead the engineering efforts behind its API Catalog product. This product serves as the system of record for APIs within large enterprises, connecting to where APIs live, consolidating them into a single inventory, and providing governance features like ownership, environment management, and compliance evidence. The future vision for the API Catalog is to become the company-wide standard for large platform organizations, handling significantly larger estates, reaching every enterprise environment and gateway, and acting as the control plane for API governance. The role involves leading a small, senior, US-based team and collaborating extensively with other teams to deliver on the roadmap.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in software engineering.
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams.
  • Proven depth on a hard technical problem personally solved (a system designed and debugged by the candidate).
  • Experience taking a validated product from 1→10 (scaling a product for large organizations).
  • Production ownership of an enterprise integration surface at breadth (many third-party providers with diverse characteristics).
  • Demonstrated ability to ship work depending on teams not managed by the candidate.
  • Experience leading a senior-heavy team.
  • Experience with multi-tenant enterprise SaaS, including on-prem or self-managed infrastructure and compliance requirements.
  • Full lifecycle ownership from design through production support.
  • Clear, economical communication with engineers, executives, and customers.

Nice To Haves

  • API gateway technologies and cloud provider control-plane APIs (AWS, GCP, Azure), plus Kubernetes.
  • CI/CD systems and developer workflow tooling.
  • Analytical datastores supporting customer-facing reporting (ClickHouse or similar), including operational aspects.
  • Event-driven and asynchronous API technologies, particularly Kafka.
  • Governance, audit, or compliance reporting for enterprise buyers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, coach, and grow a team of experienced engineers.
  • Hire deliberately and set a clear technical bar for the team.
  • Set explicit goals, provide direct feedback, and ensure team's work is legible to the organization.
  • Reduce single-owner concentration on critical systems and spread context deliberately.
  • Land work that crosses team boundaries by securing commitments, sequencing plans, and unblocking reviews.
  • Define clear contracts between the catalog and its dependencies.
  • Drive architecture and execution across ingestion, federation, service model, and reporting/deployment data layers.
  • Set and maintain the quality bar for reporting accuracy.
  • Treat on-prem and self-managed deployments as first-class variants.
  • Uphold engineering fundamentals including design review, testing, safe staged rollout, and instrumentation.
  • Own the API Catalog engineering roadmap and its tradeoffs.
  • Break large initiatives into incrementally shippable milestones.
  • Own production reliability and the support burden, treating recurring toil as a design problem.

Benefits

  • Competitive equity package.
  • Full medical coverage.
  • Flexible PTO.
  • Wellness reimbursement.
  • Monthly lunch stipend.
  • Wellness programs.
  • Frequent and fascinating team-building events.
  • Donation-matching program.
