Sr Engineer - CENG, Electrical Projects, Steam & Gas Engineering

ConEdison•New York, NY
•$125,000 - $160,000

About The Position

The Senior Engineer directs or performs major or complex electrical power engineering assignments under general guidance and makes independent decisions on engineering problems and methods. This role requires deep expertise in electrical power systems analysis, equipment specification, and generating station design. It performs studies and calculations for the company’s steam and gas generating stations and applies knowledge of generators, transformers, switchgear, protective relaying, grounding, and applicable NERC, NPCC, and NYSRC reliability requirements. The role has full project engineering responsibility, including managing budgets, schedules, scoping documents, vendor relationships, and purchase specifications from conception through commissioning. The Senior Engineer coordinates with Steam & Gas Engineering groups, plant operations personnel, vendors, and contractors to deliver safe, reliable, code-compliant solutions. The position requires ownership, early identification of issues and ambiguity, design-basis discipline, and comfort working in active power generation plant environments. The position does not provide employment pursuant to the terms of a STEM OPT Training Plan. The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment and is expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, potentially including nights, weekends, and holidays. The role may involve field visits and on-site engineering support at steam and gas power generation plants, travel to company locations, and work in varied weather conditions.

  • Understanding of grounding system design, ground fault protection, and step-and-touch potential analysis.
  • Demonstrated experience managing project budgets, schedules, and full project lifecycle activities in a utility or heavy industrial environment.
  • Experience with cross-discipline drawing verification and peer review, including reconciling information across electrical, instrumentation, and mechanical drawing sets for field accuracy.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to develop and deliver effective presentations.
  • Demonstrated project management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Ability to respond to system emergencies; work in all weather conditions; climb ladders and stairs; stand, walk, and climb for the duration of the workday; travel to company locations for storm restoration and heat contingencies; and wear required PPE such as fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses.
  • Comfort working in and around steam and gas power generation plants, including field visits and on-site engineering support.
