Senior Engineer - San Francisco

About The Position

Eli builds software for utilities, government agencies, and their partners to operate energy-efficiency programs. The platform manages project eligibility, document review, reporting, and payments, and advances money to contractors before rebates are paid. Eli has processed hundreds of thousands of projects and advanced nearly $50 million to contractors, and is preparing to support substantially more project and capital volume. The Senior Engineer will work directly with cofounders Adrian, who leads product, and Eduardo, who leads engineering, as part of a seven-engineer team. Engineers own significant parts of the system and deliver changes to production and customers quickly. The role involves building end-to-end product features, developing AI-supported decisions around eligibility and document verification, maintaining money movement and reconciliation systems, improving internal operations tools, and owning platform reliability. Engineers use AI agents extensively, but remain accountable for the code and decisions they ship. The position is based in San Francisco and is primarily in person; fully remote work within the US may be accommodated for the right candidate. Applicants must be US residents due to compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • At least 6 years of experience building production software, including experience being responsible for a system when it breaks.
  • Deep backend TypeScript experience, such as with Bun, Node, Next.js, tRPC, Prisma, or similar technologies.
  • Solid relational database skills in MySQL or Postgres, including schema design, query plans, and migrations.
  • Track record of taking on work outside an assigned area and completing it.
  • Ability to debug from first principles, reason across the browser-to-database stack, and use git effectively, including rebase.
  • Ability to use AI agents while independently understanding, explaining, defending, and validating the resulting code.
  • Strong ownership and business judgment, with a focus on problems solved rather than tickets closed.
  • Comfort and competence working in compliance- and security-heavy environments involving personal and financial data, audits, and program rules.
  • Clear, concise written updates.
  • US residency; the role is open to US residents only.

  • Experience with infrastructure tools such as Pulumi, Docker, Vercel, Tailscale, Datadog, or Sentry.
  • Experience with energy programs or utility software.
  • Experience building production software before AI coding tools became common.

Responsibilities

  • Identify and deliver product work for processors, contractors, and program administrators, then monitor and improve it based on production results.
  • Build and evaluate AI-supported document verification, eligibility, and fraud-detection decisions; determine when to use a model, rule, or human review.
  • Maintain financial systems, including the ledger, lender loan tape, and reconciliation against bank records, ensuring accuracy and auditability.
  • Consolidate outgrown internal systems such as Airtable into in-house tools for operations and program configuration.
  • Improve the platform and production infrastructure, including CI speed, test-suite health, backups, database migrations, alerts, and workflows.
  • Investigate production failures, find root causes, make fixes, and document what happened.
  • Use AI agents while reviewing and taking responsibility for every line of code submitted.
  • Learn how rebate programs, underwriting, and contractor payments work, and challenge specifications when needed.
  • Communicate concise updates about completed work, blockers, and expected delivery.

Benefits

  • Meaningful equity package.
  • Generous medical, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Flexible, unlimited time off, with a minimum of three weeks encouraged.
