About The Position

This position is based out of and reports to Thrivent’s HQ in Minneapolis, MN, but allows for the option to telecommute from a home office anywhere in the United States. The Senior Engineer will design solutions, apply technical knowledge to drive outcomes for customers, and work and problem solve independently on initiatives that align to the broader software engineering strategy. They will develop software independently, as well as collaboratively with the team, in developing core software for the product that delivers outcomes. This role requires consistency and dependability in delivering core software that meets/exceeds the teams’ expectations for stability, scalability, and resilience. The Senior Engineer will learn and apply new techniques, share new ideas and techniques with the team, and encourage junior engineers to invest in learning. They will collaborate within the team by participating in collaboration sessions to provide technical expertise to solve problems/remove technical roadblocks, and participate in product planning and implementation, helping the team understand and decompose work. Additionally, they will define engineering standards and patterns, contribute to developing engineering practices, templates, and frameworks. In DevOps, they will continuously assess technology to build more stable, scalable, and resilient software, using data to measure progress, and promote and expand on the use of the CI/CD pipeline. They will participate in team support rotation and provide expert knowledge on focus subsystems. The Senior Engineer will also select and manage technology vendors, contributing to selection criteria and participating in proof of concept/technology along with the vendor. Coaching engineers is a key part of this role, providing guidance to junior engineers, technical expertise to solve issues, and domain expertise on software products. They will also recruit and build talent by engaging in the tech community, participating in the interview process, and contributing to the recruitment process structure. Finally, they will model Thrivent’s leadership competencies, support an environment of continuous improvement and employee engagement, and shape a culture that represents Thrivent’s purpose, promise, and values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s or foreign equivalent degree in Applied Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field plus 5 years of progressive post-baccalaureate experience as a data engineer, specialist or consultant, or closely related occupation.
  • 5 years of experience in the following: Development and maintenance of data warehouse and business intelligence using Informatica PowerCenter and Zena
  • 5 years of experience in the following: Working with Oracle, SQL, PL/SQL and other relational databases
  • 5 years of experience in the following: Designing and architecting data pipelines
  • 5 years of experience in the following: Processing data from OLTP/Flat file to staging and from staging to OLAP environment through various transformations
  • 5 years of experience in the following: Interacting with clients for requirement gathering and finalizing specifications.
  • 3 years of experience in the following: Working with IICS and Snowflake
  • 2 years of experience in the following: Working with Databricks
  • Demonstrable experience in the following: Datawarehouse model using STAR schema.
  • Demonstrable experience in the following: Developing and executing test cases.
  • Demonstrable experience in the following: Building reusable components for reporting and analytics
  • Demonstrable experience in the following: Acting as a subject matter expertise in data analysis, building optimized data pipelines, deploying and maintaining a large volume of heterogenous data to create enterprise data lake.

  • Provide technical expertise and help the team to solve technical/software issues
  • Provide trainings to the junior developers and groom them
  • Provide domain expertise on software products in their area to junior engineers to help them learn/grow their skills and contribute as part of the team
  • Recruit/Build Talent
  • Engage in the tech community to build the Thrivent technology brand and position as the employer of choice in the market
  • Participate in the interview process or be part of the panel to recruit the right talent to the team
  • Contribute to the recruitment to define the structure of the interview process to hire the right talent to the team
