About The Position

DEPT® is seeking a Senior Engineer (Java/SAP) for a 3-month project with a financial client, with the possibility of extension, potentially lasting into 2027. The role requires the candidate to overlap at least 4 hours with Eastern US Time Zone hours, as the team is split between AMER and EMEA. Requirements

  • 4+ years experience working in production applications written in Java and Spring Boot
  • Experience integrating and working with SAP S/4HANA, Cloud for Credit, Business Technology Platform (BTP), Cloud Application Programming Model (CAP), and SAP UI5 is required
  • Solid understanding of software architecture and design principles
  • Experience building and maintaining scalable systems on AWS
  • Proficient with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Copilot, Claude Code, Cursor) as part of standard development workflow
  • Working knowledge of performance optimization and security best practices
  • Excellent leadership and strategic thinking abilities
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to lead engineering teams
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Proven track record of leading and delivering complex software projects, ideally involving third-party SaaS platform integrations

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Node, HTML, CSS is strongly preferred but not required
  • Experience with credit or financial systems is a plus
  • Experience working with Cloud Foundry is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Develops significant features of applications written in Java that integrate with SAP, taking direction from a lead or principal engineer.
  • Identifies solutions that meet business needs for internal or client projects. Troubleshoots and resolves software issues and optimizes performance.
  • Consistently applies best practices in coding, testing, and design patterns, and encourages teammates to do the same.
  • Actively participates in team discussions around architecture and infrastructure planning (e.g., programming patterns, API design, database schema).
  • Breaks down specifications into tasks and stories, creating clear engineering workflows for sprints.
  • Researches solutions independently and knows when to ask for help without spinning wheels; avoids reinventing known solutions.
  • Leads by example in code reviews, pull request cadence, and testing; mentors junior engineers where applicable.
  • Collaborates with cross-functional teams to define technical requirements and ensure successful project delivery.
