About The Position

Buckeye is seeking a Senior Engineer, Fire Protection with experience in design engineering for the pipeline and terminals business, chemicals industry, other process industry, or with an engineering firm serving these industries. This role is responsible for corporate oversight and support of the fire protection program, serving as the Subject Matter Expert (SME). The position will oversee compliance implementation of programs with respect to NFPA codes/standards, OSHA, multiple local & state AJH’s, and API Industry Best Practices for fire protection and response. The Senior Engineer will collaborate closely with local operations, project management, and emergency response to foster a compliance and risk management mindset aligned with the company vision. The role requires leadership in developing and communicating a fire protection improvement strategy to executive leadership, assessing organizational needs, associated risks, and improvement plans, and mentoring impacted employees. The engineer will also act as the engineer of record for projects in the Eastern region, performing analysis of existing systems and designing new fire protection systems (suppression, detection, alarm, mass notification). Consulting for life safety, building, and fire code compliance, developing design analyses, code requirement summaries, life safety plans, and reports are key responsibilities. This includes planning and design details, engineering concepts, distribution plans, riser diagrams, drawings, specifications, and engineering reports. The role also involves observing and reviewing on-site projects, fulfilling contractual obligations for construction phase services, overseeing other personnel, and managing client interactions. Experience with fire sprinkler, suppression, and fire alarm system design, hydraulic calculations, NFPA Codes, API Best Practices, and International Building and Fire Codes is essential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, or related engineering fields is preferred.
  • Approximately 8+ years of technical experience in a technical fire protection design or consulting role involving fire protection systems.
  • Experience in designing fire sprinkler, suppression, and fire alarm systems layouts utilizing hydraulic calculation programs.
  • Knowledge of NFPA Codes, API Best Practices and International Building and Fire Codes is required.
  • Demonstrated commitment to environmental responsibility and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent communication, both written and verbal.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, and professionalism when dealing with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects immediately, including developing proposals, project planning, staffing, and successful delivery of projects both through independent work and engaging other FLS teammates.
  • Ability to cultivate good working relationships with operations, HSSE, project managers, project teams, FLS teammates, External Risk Insurers and other clients.
  • Effectively network with other fire and life safety industry professionals.
  • Ability to safely and successfully perform essential job functions consistent with ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards, including meeting qualitative and or/quantitative productivity standards.
  • Ability to maintain regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.

Nice To Haves

  • Fire Protection Engineering PE registration is preferred.
  • Professional Engineer license or the ability to get licensed is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide corporate oversight and support for the fire protection program.
  • Serve as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for fire protection.

  • Develop thorough and clear Design Analysis, Summary of Code Requirements, Life Safety Plans, and accurate Reports.
  • Create planning and design details including engineering concepts, distribution plans, riser diagrams, detail drawings, schedules, specifications, design analysis, and engineering reports.
  • Observe and review on-site projects and fulfill contractual obligations for construction phase services.
  • Oversee other personnel assigned to fire protection responsibilities.
  • Manage day-to-day contacts with internal and external clients.
  • Support interactions with risk insurers during audits, assessments, and corrective action planning.
  • Design fire sprinkler, suppression, and fire alarm systems layouts utilizing hydraulic calculation programs.
  • Ensure compliance with NFPA Codes, API Best Practices, and International Building and Fire Codes.
