About The Position

Applied High Voltage (AHV) is seeking a Senior Engineer - Electrical to perform design of LV, HV, EHV electrical power systems with an emphasis on the design of electrical power substations for transmission and distribution systems. This role is responsible for leading a team of engineers and drafters on substation engineering design projects, including detailed electrical and physical design for high voltage substation projects.

Requirements

  • Professional Engineering license (one or more US states) is required.
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Electrical Power Engineering.
  • 10+ Years’ Experience in Design of Transmission Level Substations (13.8kV – 500 kV) including: Transmission Line Protection, Substation Protection and Control Systems, Generator, Transformer and Bus Protection Schemes, Development of station/substation single-line, protection, control and SCADA diagrams including utility and ISO interconnection and operational requirements, Equipment specifications, designs and layouts including major equipment and protection, control, SCADA, and low-voltage auxiliary systems, Capacitor Banks and Distribution Feeder Protection, Demonstrated experience at all interfaces of transmission level projects.
  • Minimum of 8 years of application experience with SEL, GE, etc. relays.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, NESC, OSHA, NERC, RUS, IEEE, ANSI, IEC, Local and Federal Building Codes.
  • Familiarity with, and review of, substation physical drawings and calculations including general arrangements, clearances, details, conduit, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
  • Highly motivated and able to execute tasks from a lead role.
  • Good written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to work well with others in a team setting.
  • Skilled in engineering theories and principles.
  • Skilled in practice of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform design of LV, HV, EHV electrical power systems with emphasis on design of electrical power substations of transmission and distribution systems.
  • Lead a team of engineers and drafters for substation engineering design projects including detailed electrical and physical design for high voltage substation projects.
  • Coordinate project flow and issues between all engineering disciplines and project management.
  • Provide engineering support to project management, procurement, and construction on all stages of projects.
  • Coordinate and lead multi-disciplines engineering teams to efficiently execute engineering and design of substation/transmission projects.
  • Provide oversight and guidance of other electrical engineers on the execution of projects.
  • Read, interpret, and translate client/contract specifications into electrical & protection design schemes.
  • Develop single-line switching and protection diagrams.
  • Create equipment specifications and support procurement of equipment, including working with vendors and reviewing vendor/contractor-proposed equipment.
  • Develop three-line and DC schematic diagrams.
  • Develop and maintain a bill of materials.
  • Develop cable and conduit schedules, including sizing.
  • Conduct required calculations and create reports: AC and DC systems including sizing DC battery, overvoltage protection and coordination, conduit fill, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
  • Develop control panel layouts and wiring diagrams; Select protective devices and ratings.
  • Review and coordinate substation physical drawings and calculations including general arrangements, clearances, details, conduit, grounding, lightning protection, etc.
  • Design underground MV and HV cabling systems including cable ampacity, installation details, etc.
  • Coordinate design with clients, vendors, and subcontractors, including attendance at meetings.
  • Assure that all engineering documents and records are properly maintained.
  • Coordinate with purchasing and quality control personnel.
  • Coordinate/guide designers/drafters and perform detailed review/approval of electrical drawings.
  • Understand unique requirements and constraints of multiple project types, including engineering-only, EPC, utility, renewable, industrial, commercial, etc.
  • Teach and mentor young engineers and/or new employees on electrical engineering, design, theory, and company practices.
  • Participate in the development and review of company standards and design tools to optimize design applications.
  • Act as Engineer of Record for one or more projects simultaneously.
