About The Position

Sila is a next-generation battery materials company working to increase battery energy density and support clean-energy adoption. The Senior Engineer, Cell Design will join the Slurry & Coating team and contribute to developing batteries for industrial devices. The role involves hands-on laboratory work, lithium-ion cell design, experimental planning and execution, data analysis, failure analysis, and collaboration with internal teams and external development partners. The engineer will help meet program objectives and support the development and launch of commercial products.

Requirements

• Strong technical background and experience with lithium-ion batteries, including process steps such as slurry, coating, cell design, and cell teardown.
• Well-organized, data-driven approach to problem solving and experimental design, with curiosity and attention to detail.
• Proficiency with databases and data analysis tools such as JMP or Python.
• Exceptional communication abilities with internal groups and external customers.
• Ability to plan and implement multiple projects simultaneously.
• Understanding of laboratory safety best practices.
• At least a B.S. or M.S. in engineering or science and 2–4 years of experience in batteries or a related field, or a Ph.D. with university experience.
• Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a lab coat, gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toe safety shoes.
• Ability to operate a computer and office equipment while working at a fixed location.
• Ability to move long distances, such as between buildings, and remain stationary for extended periods as needed.
• Ability to pass a respirator fit test and wear respiratory protection as needed.
• Ability to travel up to 10% domestically and internationally.

• Korean or Japanese language fluency.

Responsibilities

• Lead joint development partnerships by facilitating technical meetings, delivering data packages on established timelines, managing partner relationships, and executing experiments aligned with project goals.
• Develop and execute experiments in small and prototype full cells across slurry and coating, electrolyte optimization for anode and cathode, cell design and integration, and electrochemical test methods.
• Conduct failure analysis on small pouch full and prototype cells to identify root causes.
• Use data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling to interpret test results, predict performance, and inform design iterations.
• Communicate ideas, plans, and results to internal stakeholders and support preparation of data packages for customers and development partners.
• Develop techniques or test methods that detect downstream challenges early and accelerate learning cycles.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams at Sila and, as needed, external customers.
• Invest in and demonstrate Sila’s company values and vision as the company grows.
