Senior Engineer 2, Merchandising (Hybrid - Seattle, WA)

NordstromSeattle, WA
$166,000 - $258,000Hybrid

About The Position

As a Senior Engineer 2, you'll be part of a key team of Nordstrom Technology professionals who apply engineering and design principles to build the platform that brings Nordstrom's supplier facing experiences together. This level owns the quality of a team's work, makes sure designs are clear and complete for execution, and can take on complex design and problem solving without supervision. You'll work across two connected areas within the Merchandising Org: Retail Hub, the platform that gives internal users and external supplier partners a single place to work across onboarded applications, and NVMS (Nordstrom Vendor Management System), which modernizes how Nordstrom manages merchandising vendor data and improves the supplier experience across JWN. Retail Hub provides shared platform capabilities, including task management, notification management, and user management, that NVMS and other onboarded apps build on top of. This is a full stack position: you'll move across frontend, backend, and integration layers, and you're expected to bring a working understanding of AI tools and technologies to how you design and build. This role is offered as hybrid in Seattle, WA. Candidates must be available to work in office at the Nordstrom corporate headquarters a minimum of 4 days/week to be considered for this position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field.
  • 7+ years of experience in software engineering or technology roles.
  • 2+ years of full stack development experience, building both user facing applications and the backend services behind them.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and deliver complex, distributed systems in a production environment.
  • Strong proficiency in a modern frontend framework (such as React) as well as Java and the Spring ecosystem for backend services.
  • Experience with event driven architecture, including designing services that publish, consume, and react to events reliably at scale.
  • Experience designing and consuming APIs and data contracts shared across multiple teams or applications.
  • Experience building and operating production services on AWS (for example Lambda, RDS, DynamoDB, S3, SQS/SNS) or comparable cloud platforms.
  • Working knowledge of AI tools and technologies, and a point of view on where they add real value in product development, not just novelty.
  • Experience with, or strong interest in, vendor or supplier facing platforms, marketplace data, or merchandising systems.
  • A track record of driving code quality, testing, and engineering best practices across a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with vendor management, supplier onboarding, or merchandising data systems.
  • Hands on experience with agentic AI frameworks (such as LangGraph or AWS Bedrock Agents) or retrieval augmented generation (RAG) pipelines.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure as code tooling (such as Terraform or AWS CDK) and CI/CD pipeline design.
  • Track record of contributing to open-source projects or publishing technical content.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain full stack features across Retail Hub and NVMS, from React based UI to backend services and the integrations that connect them.
  • Extend Retail Hub's platform level capabilities, including task management and notifications, so new and existing apps can onboard cleanly and consistently.
  • Design and build event driven workflows, using events to trigger, track, and update tasks reliably as they move across services and teams.
  • Build and evolve NVMS capabilities that give suppliers and internal vendor management teams a modern, reliable way to manage vendor data across JWN.
  • Design APIs and data contracts that other teams onboarding to Retail Hub can depend on, treating backward compatibility and clear ownership boundaries as first class concerns.
  • Apply AI tools and techniques where they meaningfully improve the product or the team's velocity, for example automating manual data reconciliation, speeding up development workflows, or improving supplier facing experiences.
  • Take ownership of systems or designs that span multiple people's work, breaking work into smaller tasks for more junior engineers to support.
  • Drive design and code reviews, making sure the team ships high quality, scalable, maintainable, and well tested code to a platform other apps and external suppliers depend on.
  • Maintain a DevOps mindset, promoting cloud native solutions while implementing and supporting monitoring, alerting, CI/CD pipelines, and the team's cloud infrastructure.
  • Partner with product, design, and other engineering teams, both internal and vendor facing, to translate business needs into reliable, observable features.
  • Champion engineering best practices and mentor junior engineers on the team.
