About the Role We are looking for a Director of Engineering to own the full Seller Experience domain at TCGplayer. This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for the end-to-end technology that powers the seller lifecycle: onboarding, listing and catalog tools, inventory management, Point of Sale, order processing, fulfillment, seller analytics, digitization, and support tooling. You will lead 4–6 engineering teams (approximately 30–50 engineers across a mix of US-based and offshore staff), set technical direction, and partner closely with Product and Design to deliver platforms that make TCGplayer the best place for sellers to do business. This role reports directly to the CTO. Why This Role Matters Sellers are the lifeblood of our marketplace. The quality of the tools we build directly determines whether a small hobby shop can scale into a thriving business. As part of eBay, we are investing heavily in next-generation seller technology — modernizing legacy platforms, launching new products, and scaling systems to support the growth of the collectible hobby market. The Director of Engineering for Seller Experience will be at the center of this transformation.

Requirements

  • 5-7+ years of engineering leadership experience managing managers (not just individual engineers), with demonstrated success building and scaling teams of 30+ engineers.
  • Proven track record of delivering complex, large-scale software initiatives from concept through production — ideally including greenfield product launches and platform migrations.
  • Deep understanding of modern software architecture patterns, including microservices, event-driven systems, and API design, with hands-on experience in .NET or comparable ecosystems.
  • Experience managing distributed/offshore engineering teams, with a nuanced understanding of what makes remote collaboration successful.
  • Strong product sense — you understand how technical decisions impact the seller and buyer experience and can partner effectively with Product and Design.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate technical complexity into clear narratives for both engineering teams and executive audiences.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in e-commerce, marketplace, or fintech platforms — especially with seller-facing or merchant tooling.
  • Familiarity with Point of Sale systems, inventory management, or order fulfillment technology.
  • Experience operating within or alongside a large parent organization (e.g., post-acquisition integration, working within eBay-scale processes).
  • Background in agile delivery at scale (SAFe, LeSS, or similar frameworks), with a pragmatic rather than dogmatic approach.

Responsibilities

  • Own the vision for the entire Seller Experience platform, spanning multiple product surfaces and services.
  • Drive platform modernization initiatives, including migrating legacy systems to modern, scalable architectures that can support the next phase of TCGplayer’s growth.
  • Make high-judgment technical decisions on build-vs-buy, technology selection, and system design — with a strong emphasis on reliability, performance, and developer velocity.
  • Ensure engineering practices (CI/CD, observability, incident response, code quality) are best-in-class across all Seller Experience teams.
  • Partner with Product and Design leadership to define roadmaps and translate business objectives into executable engineering plans.
  • As needed, lead greenfield product development from concept through launch.
  • Establish and maintain a culture of iterative delivery — shipping incremental value to sellers quickly while managing technical risk.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Engineering Managers who each own delivery for their respective product areas.
  • Build and scale high-performing engineering teams across US-based and offshore locations, including hiring, performance management, and career development.
  • Foster a collaborative, high-trust engineering culture where teams have clear ownership, psychological safety, and a bias toward action.
  • Manage effectively across time zones, establishing communication patterns and rituals that keep distributed teams aligned and productive.
  • Serve as a key member of the engineering leadership team, contributing to company-wide technical strategy and organizational planning.
  • Partner with peer Directors of Engineering, the Platform team, and Infrastructure to align on shared services, tooling, and architectural standards.
  • Communicate engineering progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to executive stakeholders including the CTO, CPO, and eBay leadership.
