About The Position

Sargent & Lundy is one of the largest and most experienced power industry engineering and consulting firms. This Senior Energy Consultant position is within Sargent & Lundy’s Consulting group and supports the continued growth of the group, particularly in renewable energy, battery energy storage, and utility planning/advisory practice areas. The role involves working on project teams that provide a wide variety of technical consulting, advisory, independent engineering, due diligence, economic, market, and planning studies for power project developers, lenders, investors, grid operators, utilities, independent power producers, and government agencies. The Consulting Group serves clients across the United States and internationally. This position requires significant face-to-face interaction with clients. It offers a hybrid work arrangement, with three days in the office and two days remote, within a fast-paced, dynamic, and interesting work environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or civil engineering (other engineering disciplines may be considered)
  • 10 or more years of experience in the power industry, including one or more of the following: Design of utility-scale solar, wind, and/or battery energy storage projects; Independent engineering and due diligence services for power projects; Power project development; Solar, wind, and/or battery energy storage construction management
  • Excellent verbal/written communication skills
  • Experience writing technical reports and proposals
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to work with and guide others
  • Project planning and leadership skills
  • Willing or able to lead others who use modern tools

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in an engineering discipline or business (e.g., MBA)
  • Experience in project finance or financial modeling of power projects
  • Experience with owner’s engineering activities during power project execution
  • Overseeing engineers who program or script (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) to automate engineering tasks, with review of automated outputs
  • Additional learning, such as a minor, certificate, or other experience in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, or related fields that enables effective oversight of automation and agentic AI-enabled engineering workflows

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical consulting and advisory services to power project developers to support new utility-scale solar, wind, gas, battery energy storage, and other projects
  • Provide independent engineering and due diligence services for lenders and investors to evaluate the financing of new power and infrastructure projects
  • Conduct technical, economic, and market studies for grid operators, utilities, and research agencies
  • Perform planning studies and business case development for utilities, independent power producers, and government agencies
  • Engage in face-to-face interaction with power plant developers and owners, as well as lenders and investors, during the execution of consulting services work
  • Lead others in taking engineering problems from issue to solution by setting expectations for using data and modern tools such as automation and AI to improve workflows, reduce rework, and deliver cost-effective designs
  • Direct automation and process-improvement work, for example, how teams automate calculations, summarize technical documents, or generate design documentation
  • Guide when and how AI or agentic AI tools are used while ensuring results are checked
