Senior Embedded Systems QA Engineer

EdgeBeam WirelessBoston, MA
Onsite

About The Position

We are seeking a hands-on QA contributor to spearhead our testing and validation efforts for our product line of embedded receiver devices. This will cover both the physical hardware and the software running over top of it. You will work closely with the internal devices team as well as external vendors to develop and implement test plans and provide feedback on functionality. This role is critical to ensuring we have reliable and trustworthy devices in a low-touch environment where stability is key to customer success.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of relevant experience in embedded systems testing, validation, or a related hands-on engineering role
  • Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, firmware, operating systems, networking, and software
  • Experience working with Android and embedded Linux systems, particularly OpenWRT and Yocto-based platforms
  • Knowledge of AI-assisted testing procedures and best practices
  • Familiarity with command line environments, serial consoles, ADB, and JTAG
  • Ability to write test automation and diagnostic scripts, preferably in Python
  • Understanding of core networking concepts, such as packet structures, UDP, DHCP, routing, and multicast
  • Practical experience testing cellular, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and other forms of network connection
  • Basic understanding of GNSS concepts and behavior
  • Experience systematically isolating issues based on available diagnostic information
  • Understanding of software testing practices including functional, regression, integration, negative, and reliability testing
  • Comfort with hands-on hardware work, including basic usage of electronics and mechanical tools
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work across hardware and software boundaries
  • Experience building automated testing systems incorporating physical hardware
  • Ability to work independently and own defects from discovery through verification of fix
  • Strong written communication skills for documentation of test plans and defects
  • An AI first mindset and an ability to solve and implement using AI

Responsibilities

  • Own hands-on validation of embedded devices across the hardware, operating system, and application software
  • Develop and execute test plans for new releases and regressions of both software and hardware revisions
  • Define a strategy for exploratory, destructive, fault injection, and chaos testing
  • Reproduce, isolate, and document defects with sufficient detail for engineering to diagnose and resolve issues
  • Provide sufficient testing and evidence of issues to drive resolution with external vendors
  • Perform functional, integration, reliability, performance, negative, and edge-case testing
  • Build and maintain automated test suites to improve coverage and reduce repetitive manual testing when possible
  • Analyze logs, serial output, packet captures, and telemetry data to identify root cause of failures
  • Work directly with the development team to expedite the feedback cycle of implementation, testing, and defect resolution
  • Engage with the lab engineer to expand test-environment capabilities, improve reliability, and minimize friction in test execution
  • Proactively develop test coverage based on prior experience to expand the test suite beyond simple requirement matching
  • Build out a certification process for third party devices and systems
