About The Position

Eaton’s ES AMER ESS division is currently seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer. This role is based out of Raleigh, NC. We are seeking a Senior Embedded Software Engineer to support the development, integration, and maintenance of UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and Lithium-Ion Energy Storage System solutions. This role will focus on embedded software development, battery system integration, communication protocol implementation, and sustaining engineering activities for commercial and industrial power conversion products. The successful candidate will be responsible for integrating Battery Management Systems (BMS) with UPS platforms, supporting fielded products, troubleshooting complex system issues, and contributing to the development of next-generation energy storage solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 3 years of industry experience developing or supporting embedded software for industrial, energy storage, power electronics, or UPS products.
  • Experience developing embedded software in C/C++.
  • Experience troubleshooting and supporting released embedded products.
  • Experience working in multidisciplinary product development environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Experience with UPS, energy storage, power conversion, or electrical power system products.
  • Experience integrating Lithium-Ion battery systems and Battery Management Systems.
  • Experience integrating communication protocols in embedded systems.
  • Experience implementing and troubleshooting MODBUS RTU and MODBUS TCP communications.
  • Experience with CAN, CANopen, RS-485, Ethernet, and related industrial communication protocols.
  • Experience with real-time embedded operating systems.
  • Knowledge of power electronics, battery charging systems, and energy management systems.
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink and model-based development.
  • Experience supporting products through the full development lifecycle from concept through field support.
  • Familiarity with UL, IEC, and industry standards applicable to UPS and energy storage systems.
  • Experience with Software Configuration Management and Git-based development workflows.
  • Experience with LLM coding tools such as Copilot, Claude, or other harnessing
  • Experience with Hardware in the Loop systems such as OPAL RT or Typhoon

Responsibilities

  • Develop, integrate, test, and maintain embedded software for UPS and Energy Storage System products.
  • Integrate Lithium-Ion battery systems and Battery Management Systems (BMS) with UPS control architecture.
  • Design, implement, and validate communication interfaces between UPS controllers and external battery systems.
  • Troubleshoot communication, interoperability, and system-level integration issues between UPS, ESS, and associated control systems.
  • Support software releases for new product development and sustaining engineering activities.
  • Investigate and resolve customer-reported and field-observed software issues.
  • Perform root cause analysis and corrective action development for product issues.
  • Collaborate with controls, systems, hardware, and test engineering teams to ensure successful product integration.
  • Participate in software architecture reviews, design reviews, and code reviews.
  • Develop software requirements, design documentation, test procedures, and validation reports.
  • Support laboratory testing and validation activities involving UPS systems, batteries, and power electronic equipment.
  • Contribute to cybersecurity, reliability, and product lifecycle maintenance initiatives.
