Senior Embedded Developer

GeotabOakville, ON
CA$104,400 - CA$135,700Hybrid

About The Position

Geotab is seeking a Senior Embedded Developer who will design, build, and maintain the embedded test automation framework that powers firmware quality across Geotab’s entire IoT device portfolio. This role is ideal for someone who loves working at the intersection of embedded systems and hands-on hardware engineering and is keen to join an industry leader. As a Senior Embedded Developer, your key area of responsibility will be building and evolving the test automation framework that enables firmware teams across Geotab — including GO firmware, IOX, asset tracker, and Go Focus — to automate device testing at scale. You will build embedded systems end-to-end—from reading schematics and wiring hardware to writing Python and C++ code, as well as deploying and monitoring software across our international offices. You will also contribute to cloud integrations (GCP, BigQuery) and maintain thorough documentation across all areas of responsibility. To be successful in this role you will be someone who is genuinely fascinated by how computer systems work at the hardware level — a natural tinkerer who is just as comfortable tracing a bug down to the wire level as they are writing clean, maintainable code. In addition, the successful candidate will bring deep object-oriented programming fundamentals, strong Linux and Bash scripting skills, and the ability to take on new tools and technologies independently as the role evolves.

Requirements

  • Diploma or degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience are also considered
  • Senior-level experience (typically 5+ years) in embedded firmware or hardware development
  • Proficiency in Python and C++, with strong object-oriented programming fundamentals
  • Linux and Bash command line expertise — required for daily embedded systems work and CI/CD pipeline management
  • Familiarity with embedded communication protocols (serial, SPI, I2C) and ability to read electronic schematics and component data sheets
  • Working experience with CI/CD platforms (GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Jenkins)

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with wireless products (cellular, Bluetooth) and firmware development for resource-constrained embedded systems is strongly preferred
  • Familiarity with automotive protocols (CAN bus) and cloud platforms (GCP, BigQuery, Docker) is a plus

Responsibilities

  • Develop an in-depth understanding of Geotab IoT device firmware (GO, GOAnywhere, IOX, asset trackers, GO Focus) and how various hardware modules interact
  • Design and implement embedded test automation frameworks in Python and C++ that enable firmware developers to automate device validation.
  • Build, customize, and maintain CI/CD pipelines (GitLab and related toolchains) to support continuous firmware testing.
  • Write unit tests and perform integration and system-level testing in real and simulated vehicle environments to validate features against design requirements.
  • Conduct comprehensive code reviews to ensure industry coding standards are followed and architectural decisions are well-documented.
  • Collaborate with internal firmware customer teams (GO, IOX, asset tracker, video, GO Focus) to understand their testing requirements and deliver automation solutions.
  • Debug firmware and hardware issues, including tracing problems from the software layer all the way to the hardware level.
  • Keep up-to-date documentation for all areas of responsibility.

Benefits

  • Flex working arrangements
  • Home office reimbursement program
  • Baby bonus & parental leave top up program
  • Online learning and networking opportunities
  • Electric vehicle purchase incentive program
  • Competitive medical and dental benefits
  • Retirement savings program
