Senior Electrical Engineer

Motivo 36•Rancho Dominguez, CA, CA
•$110,000 - $130,000

About The Position

Motivo is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer for hands-on engineering work on electro-mechanical systems with embedded electronics. The role includes developing and editing top-level system architectures, designing electrical and embedded systems, and generating technical drawings of systems, components, and interfaces. The desired work split is approximately 80% hands-on engineering and 20% mentoring or similar activities. The engineer will work across concurrent, fast-paced projects with minimal direction and communicate results and recommendations to internal and external customers.

Requirements

  • Six or more years of professional engineering experience.
  • Direct technical involvement in multiple electro-mechanical projects with embedded electronics, with a deep understanding of motion/control systems theory and physics.
  • Exceptional communication skills and the ability to present results and recommendations to internal and external customers.
  • Strong ability to mentor less experienced colleagues.
  • Ability to handle concurrent, fast-paced projects with minimal direction.
  • Experience with embedded electronics design involving technologies such as microcontrollers, DSPs, programmable logic devices (FPGA or CPLD), memory, high-speed signaling, or MEMS sensors.
  • Experience with a variety of sensor types and technologies.
  • Electrical test and debug experience using industry-standard tools such as oscilloscopes, in-circuit debug tools, and digital multimeters.
  • Custom PCB design experience covering schematic entry, board layout, fabrication, assembly, and test.

Nice To Haves

  • Design experience with motors, motor controllers, power supplies, inverters/converters, or power electronics.
  • Programming experience, especially with embedded C, real-time operating systems (RTOS), or Matlab Simulink Coder (formerly Real-Time Workshop).
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, USB, SPI, I2C, and Ethernet.
  • Familiarity with high-performance vehicles such as EVs, hybrid-electric vehicles, race vehicles, Solar Car, or Formula SAE, including their design processes and components.
  • Experience designing and fabricating for automotive environments involving extreme temperature, shock, and vibration.
  • Experience with various battery chemistries and related battery management systems.
  • Experience with R&D, SBIR, venture-capital-funded, or similarly funded projects and work efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and edit top-level system architectures.
  • Design electrical and embedded-electronics systems, including relevant motors, motor controllers, power supplies, inverters, converters, power electronics, and sensors.
  • Perform electrical testing and debugging using industry-standard tools.
  • Design custom PCBs from schematic entry and board layout through fabrication, assembly, and test.
  • Generate technical drawings of systems, components, and interfaces.
  • Present results and recommendations to internal and external customers.
  • Mentor less experienced colleagues.
  • Handle concurrent, fast-paced projects with minimal direction.

Benefits

  • High-quality insurance.
  • 401(k) match.
  • Generous vacation time.
  • Monday–Thursday 4/10 work week.
  • Profit-sharing bonuses tied to overall company performance.
