Senior Electrical Engineer

Equinix•Miami, FL
•$118,000 - $176,000

About The Position

Equinix is hiring a Senior Electrical Engineer to provide expert electrical engineering support for data center operations and project delivery. The role mentors junior engineers and performs system planning, design, implementation, maintenance, and support. It leads small- to medium-scale projects and engineering initiatives, helps develop engineering standards and procedures, and works with internal and external engineering, construction, operations, vendor, and consultant teams. The position may direct day-to-day operations and the strategic delivery of a construction project or data center facility operations. A primary focus is reviewing and approving method of procedure (MOP), standard operating procedure (SOP), and emergency operating procedure (EOP) documents for critical electrical work. The engineer evaluates technical accuracy, sequencing, redundancy impacts, abort and back-out provisions, and safety requirements; provides expertise on critical switching; and supports operational troubleshooting, maintenance, commissioning, and integrated systems testing. The role also leads electrical incident investigations and root-cause analysis, analyzes power and system data for reliability trends, and drives corrective and preventive actions. The engineer applies expert operating knowledge and safe work practices, supports capacity planning and resource optimization, develops and delivers training, administers contracts and project documentation, directs project teams and vendors, and contributes to policies and procedures. The position resolves complex cross-functional problems, recommends system enhancements, and serves as a subject-matter expert who develops and executes engineering projects and shares expertise internally and externally.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in electrical system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning, with emphasis on data center or mission-critical project delivery.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Expert operating knowledge of engineering systems and advanced diagnostics and repair.
  • Expert-level knowledge of safe work practices and the ability to evaluate others' safe work practices.
  • Extensive knowledge of multiple facets of the relevant engineering discipline.
  • Ability to resolve complex, non-routine, cross-functional issues independently and with a high degree of initiative.
  • Ability to communicate technical information effectively across functions and to executive audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs for critical electrical activities within the defined service-level target, validating technical accuracy, sequencing, redundancy impacts, abort/back-out provisions, and LOTO and arc-flash requirements.
  • Assess the impact of activities on system redundancy, identify single points of failure and loss-of-redundancy windows, and help mitigate associated risks.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise for critical electrical switching, including utility transfers, generator and paralleling-switchgear operations, UPS maintenance-bypass sequences, STS operations, and MV/LV distribution switching.
  • Serve as the electrical escalation point for operations and support real-time troubleshooting and decisions during maintenance, non-routine work, and abnormal conditions.
  • Review equipment maintenance procedures and vendor scopes against OEM and NETA requirements, and support commissioning and integrated systems testing after maintenance, replacement, or capacity changes.
  • Lead root-cause analysis for electrical incidents, near-misses, and anomalies across UPS, generators, switchgear, and distribution, and drive corrective and preventive actions to closure.
  • Analyze EPMS/DCIM and power-quality data to identify failure precursors and reliability trends and incorporate lessons learned into procedures, standards, and design.
  • Apply expert knowledge of engineering systems, Equinix processes, procedures, and industry standards to resolve non-routine operational issues and recommend setting changes while considering regional and global impacts.
  • Apply and evaluate safe working practices, including lockout/tagout procedures and material safety data requirements.
  • Work with capacity and site engineering teams to resolve power or cooling limitations and optimize resource utilization.
  • Contribute to identifying and developing training programs, expand system knowledge through experience and vendor training, and train others as a subject-matter expert.
  • Generate, review, and monitor contracts, change orders, cost forecasts, and related contract-administration documents.
  • Mentor junior team members and direct internal and external project team members and vendors, including general contractors, A&E design teams, commissioning agents, and equipment suppliers.
  • Develop cross-functional SOPs and technical communications, including communications to executives using standardized templates.
  • Contribute to developing and maintaining policies and procedures, participate in document reviews, and develop policy documents with input from others.
  • Promote adherence to standards and policies through documentation reviews, commissioning activities, design summits, and data center physical inspections.
  • Independently resolve complex cross-functional issues, conduct root-cause analysis, propose solutions, and document lessons learned.
  • Recommend system-level enhancements, test the suitability of components or deployment action plans, and develop and execute engineering or construction-related projects.
  • Mentor others on areas of subject-matter expertise and lead engineering or construction-related seminars and conferences.

Benefits

  • Employee Assistance Program.
  • Health, life, disability, and voluntary insurance plans for employees and eligible family members.
  • Retirement plan with contributions available from the employee and Equinix.
  • Accrued paid time off and paid holidays.
