Senior Electrical Engineer

Equinix•Miami, FL
•$118,000 - $176,000

About The Position

The Senior Electrical Engineer mentors junior engineers and performs planning, system design, implementation, maintenance, and support. The role leads small- to medium-scale projects and engineering initiative rollouts, contributes to engineering design standards, policies, and procedures, and works with internal and external teams including design engineering, site engineering, construction management, regional operations, vendors, and consultants. The position plans and directs day-to-day operations and strategic delivery for a construction project or data center facility. The primary focus is operational support and review of methods and procedures for critical electrical work. The engineer validates technical accuracy, switching sequences, redundancy impacts, safety requirements, and recovery provisions; provides expertise on critical electrical switching; and serves as an escalation point for troubleshooting. The role also leads investigations of electrical incidents and anomalies, analyzes monitoring and power-quality data, supports equipment maintenance and testing, and works with capacity and site engineering teams to address power or cooling limitations. The position contributes to training, contract administration, vendor and project leadership, policy and procedure development, and adherence to engineering standards. It requires expert electrical systems knowledge, complex problem-solving, technical communication, and the ability to lead projects and mentor others.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience in electrical system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning, with emphasis on data center or mission-critical project delivery.
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Expert-level electrical system knowledge and extensive knowledge across multiple facets of the relevant engineering discipline.
  • Expert knowledge of safe working practices, including lockout/tagout.

Responsibilities

  • Review and approve MOPs, SOPs, and EOPs for critical electrical activities within the targeted five-business-day SLA, validating technical accuracy, sequencing, redundancy impact, abort and back-out provisions, and LOTO and arc-flash requirements.
  • Assess impacts to N, N+1, and 2N system redundancy, identifying single points of failure and loss-of-redundancy windows during maintenance and switching.
  • Provide subject-matter expertise for utility transfers, generator and paralleling-switchgear operations, UPS maintenance-bypass sequences, STS operations, and MV/LV distribution switching.
  • Serve as the electrical escalation point for operations and support real-time troubleshooting and decisions during planned maintenance, non-routine work, and abnormal conditions.
  • Review equipment maintenance procedures and vendor scopes against OEM and NETA requirements, and support commissioning and integrated systems testing following maintenance, replacement, or capacity changes.
  • Lead root cause analyses for electrical incidents, near-misses, and anomalies involving UPS, generators, switchgear, and distribution; drive corrective and preventive actions to closure.
  • Analyze EPMS/DCIM and power-quality data to identify failure precursors and reliability trends, and incorporate lessons learned into procedures, standards, and design.
  • Apply expert knowledge of engineering systems to diagnostics and repairs, and resolve non-routine issues using Equinix processes, procedures, and industry standards.
  • Evaluate and assure safe working practices, including lockout/tagout practices and understanding of MSDS.
  • Work with capacity and site engineering teams to resolve power or cooling limitations and optimize resource utilization.
  • Contribute to identifying and developing training programs; build expertise through experience, vendor training, industry participation, and shadowing; train others as a subject-matter expert.
  • Administer contracts, including generating, reviewing, and monitoring contracts, change orders, cost forecasts, and related documentation.
  • Mentor junior team members and direct internal and external project team members and vendors, including general contractors, A&E design teams, commissioning agents, and equipment suppliers.
  • Develop cross-functional SOPs and technical documents, communicate with departments and executives using standardized templates, and contribute to policy and procedure development.
  • Review and develop policy and procedure documents, and promote adherence through documentation reviews, commissioning activities, design summits, and data center physicals.
  • Resolve complex cross-functional issues independently, recommend system-level enhancements, and test components or action plans for deployments.
  • Develop and execute engineering projects, mentor others on areas of expertise, and lead internal or external engineering and construction seminars or conferences.
