About The Position

Engineering data centers with precision and expertise. At Strategic Mission Critical, we are more than just engineers; we are experts focusing solely on mission critical facilities. Our seasoned leadership team brings together decades of experience, equipping data center providers worldwide with robust, reliable solutions that keep pace with the evolving digital landscape. As demand for high-performance infrastructure accelerates - fueled by AI and the expanding digital landscape - SMC continues to lead through technical rigor and operational excellence. We’re seeking leaders who think beyond projects to improve the way we deliver them: individuals who elevate people, process, and performance across the firm. SMC is actively looking for a Senior Level Electrical Engineer to direct and execute electrical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, design of fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and power systems studies such as Neher-McGrath, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash. This candidate shall be capable of executing electrical design projects independently, beginning with driving concept level discussions and proceeding through generation of design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. The electrical design scope will be a part of a broader project and therefore this candidate will be highly capable of interfacing with design leads within SMC (mechanical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as externally including architectural, civil, structural, etc. The ideal candidate will additionally be involved in growing the electrical expertise within the company, through internal training; development and implementation of design standards; oversight and execution of quality control practices.

  • 4-year degree in electrical engineering or architectural engineering with an electrical focus preferred. 2-year degrees and EET degrees with work experience will be considered.
  • Minimum 8 years of experience in facility electrical design, particularly using Autodesk Revit for drawing development.
  • Experience in electrical design for larger industrial and commercial buildings is preferred, with experience in mission critical design a strong plus.
  • Experience performing and reviewing power studies such as Neher-McGrath, short circuit, coordination, and arc flash is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of submittments and shop drawings, and field work such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists.
  • Experience leading electrical design teams and interfacing with clients is strongly preferred.
  • Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud.
  • Knowledge of controls and monitoring systems for mechanical and electrical systems is a plus.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) License preferred; however unlicensed candidates with appropriate on-the-job experience are welcome to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Design electrical infrastructure for mission critical buildings and campuses including campus level medium voltage distribution; highly redundant power systems including various redundancy topologies such as distributed and block redundant; on-site generation and UPS backup; typical building systems such as small power, lighting, grounding, and fire alarm.
  • Coordinate with all internal and external disciplines for required electrical power connections.
  • Coordinate monitoring system interfaces for electrical equipment with controls and telecommunications engineers.
  • Understand and be capable of defining key performance criteria of power monitoring systems (EPMS), including specifications, points lists, and typical network hierarchies.
  • Review client standards, design criteria, applicable standards, and best practices in order to understand design requirements and apply them.
  • Understand local and national construction codes and project specifications.
  • Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents.
  • Have experience with the use of Microsoft tools such as Word, Power Point, Excel, and Teams.
  • Meet project deadlines, including working necessary hours to complete major deliverables.
  • Have the ability to travel when required to project sites (approximately 10-20% travel).
  • Have the ability to clearly communicate with others in both written and spoken forms.
  • Lead other engineers, designers, and modelers, and coordinate the tasks of multiple teams to execute project delivery of several projects simultaneously.
  • Mentor and train other engineers, designers and modelers to develop electrical design knowledge base.
