Learn more at https://www.jnj.com/medtech We are searching for the best talent for a Senior Electrical Engineer, R&D – MedTech to support our handheld medical devices business. This role will be located in Cincinnati, OH & work a Flex/Hybrid schedule with 3 days per week on-site. Relocation assistance is available for the ideal candidate. Our business offers a broad range of products and technologies, including surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars and sealing devices—that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Purpose: The Senior Electrical Engineer will be a key member of the Capital Systems and Electrical Engineering Center-of-Excellence (COE) within the Endo-mechanical & Energy R&D organization. The Senior R&D Electrical Engineer will work cross‑functionally with hardware and system engineering, quality, regulatory, manufacturing, and supply chain teams to drive a broad range of initiatives—from new product development and product enhancements to regulatory compliance, quality improvements, process simplification, and cost optimization. As part of the COE, s/he will serve as a technical leader/subject-matter-expert, influence best practices and help elevate electrical engineering capabilities across the organization. This role offers a unique blend of hands‑on engineering, technical leadership, and strategic problem‑solving in a fast‑paced R&D environment where innovation, quality, and reliability are critical.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or similar field is required.
  • A minimum of 5 years relevant work experience in a direct electrical engineering role in Research & Development is required.
  • Experience translating high-level customer needs into technical requirements, analyzing the tradeoffs and business impacts is required.
  • Experience with analog and digital circuitry design and development is required.
  • PCBA ideation, concept generation, design, prototyping, manufacturing, and troubleshooting experience are required.
  • Expertise in root cause analysis, verification and validation (V&V) testing and authoring test protocols is required.
  • Demonstrated ability to debug and test electrical systems using test equipment, such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, and spectrum analyzers is required.
  • Strong collaboration across organizational boundaries, proven technical leadership capabilities, and conflict resolution skills are required.
  • Experience in the medical device sector or other highly regulated industries is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • Hands‑on expertise in rapid prototyping, simulation, and iterative testing to quickly validate concepts and de‑risk electrical designs is preferred.
  • Experience with family of standards for electrical safety of medical devices IEC 60601 is preferred.
  • Familiarity with applicable standards for Battery design, manufacturing storage and transportation is preferred.
  • Experience with various programming languages (e.g. Labview, C, C++, Python, etc.) is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver robust electrical system solutions, leading circuit design, component selection, and seamless integration of electrical hardware and embedded software.
  • Drive and coordinate high‑impact engineering changes that improve devices’ electrical hardware and software performance and/or achieve cost‑optimization
  • Lead or support root cause investigations, gap analysis, and corrective actions to quickly resolve electrical design, field performance, and manufacturing issues
  • Drive compliance with applicable regulatory and industry, supporting verification, validation, risk management, and audit readiness.
  • Provide technical mentorship, design guidance, coaching and best‑practice recommendations to engineers and project teams across the organization.
  • Shape the future of the COE by driving continuous improvement in standards, tools, and engineering processes.
