Senior Electrical Engineer Endoscopes

IntuitiveSunnyvale, CA

About The Position

This is a unique role that requires multiple areas of engineering prototype development and release to production. The Senior Electrical Engineer will design and sustain new and existing endoscopes for the Intuitive Single Port robotic surgery system. The successful candidate will have the capability to adapt, learn fast and work collaboratively with other engineers to resolve complex design and manufacturing issues, as well as the ability to work in an interdisciplinary organization to deliver integrated products. The person in this position will work closely with Electrical, Vision, Firmware, Software, and Mechanical Engineers and develop designs for upcoming production versions of Intuitive endoscopes. An unusual aspect of endoscopes is exposure to high temperatures and humidity in an autoclave and exposure to ultrasonic cleaning.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of board design experience (or 6 years with Master’s or 3 years with PhD), taking designs from concept all the way to production.
  • Design for electromagnetic compliance (EMC/EMI).
  • High-speed transmission line theory and signal integrity theory.
  • Fluent in OrCAD Schematic capture (or equivalent) and layout design.
  • Experience with executing electrical engineering projects while making sound decisions on engineering – business tradeoffs.
  • Familiarity with a broad range of electronic components and hardware, including analog, power, microcontrollers, logic, and communication interfaces.
  • Familiarity and experience with PCB/PCBA fabrication, assembly and failure analysis tools and techniques.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong sense of ownership and a drive to achieve outcomes aligned with organization’s goals.
  • Ability to lead departmental and cross-functional projects and teams.
  • B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering discipline.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Allegro PCB Designer (or equivalent).
  • Experience with ANSYS (or equivalent).
  • Prior experience in medical device design, manufacturing and sterilization.
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with a team that is split among geographic regions, organize effective collaboration in time zones with limited work-day overlap, and balance cultural differences among contributors (Bonus).

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate across functions to implement electronics systems that balance performance, program risk, and commercial viability.
  • Implement detailed designs and systems in schematic form and see through layout and production release of electrical boards.
  • Develop and execute test protocols and verify designs meet requirements and specifications.
  • Collaborate with other engineering staff and teams across disciplines (such as Software, Firmware, Mechanical, Optical, Production test, Supply Chain, Clinical Development, Quality, Regulatory) to ensure design outputs work in concert with the rest of the system and meets requirements.
  • Represent Electrical Engineering on cross-functional project teams; keep track and report / present project status.
  • Collaborate in a cross-functional team to develop requirements and specifications for new designs, bring up designs, and test functionality.
  • Solicit feedback and implement iterative improvements on designs based on DFM/DFA/DFT, serviceability, reliability, longevity, and performance.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and other engineering functions to transition designs into production.
  • Contribute towards system level design decisions.
  • Act as a technical lead within the group and mentor more junior members.
  • High proficiency with oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies, and soldering stations.
