Senior Electrical Design Engineer SME

Cynet Systems•York, SC

About The Position

An experienced design engineer providing technical leadership in the design, analysis, modification, testing, and implementation of electrical power systems and equipment. The role leads complex engineering projects involving transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, motor control centers, generators, and electrical distribution systems. It serves as a technical authority, ensuring compliance with applicable codes, standards, licensing requirements, and engineering processes while supporting safe, reliable, and efficient system performance. The engineer develops design inputs, modification packages, calculations, specifications, testing requirements, and design basis documents. Workers at this level solve complex problems in their engineering specialization with limited supervision, apply fundamental concepts and procedures to progressively complex and varied work, and are expected to develop advanced skills and work with increasing independence. The role requires a minimum of 15 years of discipline experience and unique SME skills.

Requirements

  • Minimum 15 years of discipline experience and unique SME skills.
  • Ability to work on assigned projects with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, be self-motivated, exercise flexibility, and take personal responsibility for assigned accountabilities.
  • Technical abilities in power system analysis and modeling, protective relay coordination, transformer sizing and application, switchgear and circuit breaker specification, cable ampacity and routing calculations, grounding system design, electrical equipment troubleshooting, technical report and specification development, risk assessment, and engineering change implementation.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and stakeholder engagement.
  • Technical rigor, attention to detail, problem solving, troubleshooting, design ownership, accountability, cross-functional collaboration, project planning and execution, and a focus on safety and compliance.
  • Hard hat and safety gloves are required.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the Standard Design Process.
  • Qualifications for preparation of Engineering Changes (CO-FLT-ENG-2000 Design Change), Digital EC (FLT-ENG-DIGITAL-EC), Design Verification (CO-FLT-ENG-2050 Design Verification), Applicability Determination Preparer (CO-FLT-AD), and 50.59 Screener (CO-FLT-50.59-SCR).
  • Experience at a nuclear site.
  • Experience with switchyard or transmission-related Engineering Changes.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Experience with power system software such as ETAP, SKM, or PowerWorld.
  • Experience with transformer, switchgear, relay, or generator design and application.
  • Nuclear, utility, renewable energy, or large industrial plant experience.
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment commissioning and testing practices.
  • Familiarity with engineering change and configuration management processes.

Responsibilities

  • Develop engineering design packages, calculations, specifications, and drawings for power system modifications and upgrades.
  • Perform electrical system studies, including load flow, short-circuit, protective device coordination, arc flash, and voltage drop analyses.
  • Evaluate and specify power equipment, including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, motor control centers, variable frequency drives, generators, and auxiliary power equipment.
  • Prepare technical specifications and procurement documents for new equipment and modifications.
  • Develop design inputs and perform technical evaluations to ensure compliance with design basis requirements.
  • Coordinate with project managers, operations, maintenance, and vendors throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Support factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing, commissioning, and post-modification testing.
  • Conduct design reviews, technical verifications, and engineering change evaluations.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards, including IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NFPA, NESC, and organizational engineering procedures.
  • Maintain configuration control and update drawings, calculations, and equipment databases following design changes.
  • Read plant drawings, including control wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, and logic diagrams.
