About The Position

The Atlantic is seeking an experienced, Los Angeles–based editor to grow its reporting on Hollywood and the broader entertainment industry. This editor will join the Culture team and be instrumental in shaping coverage of the business and industry of Hollywood. The ideal candidate will have impeccable story judgment, substantial experience guiding reporters, and a desire to tackle the biggest stories and ideas in this world. They should be comfortable operating at all altitudes of the editorial process, with a track record of working quickly to deliver scoops and big-picture analysis for a general-interest audience, as well as steering deeply reported stories that help readers understand the many shifts occurring across the industry. Fluency in a wide array of related subject areas—technology, business, national politics—and a nuanced understanding of how they interact with the culture industry are essential. The candidate should be a sharp observer of coalescing trends, have sturdy skepticism about publicity cycles, and a nose for where the story is heading next. A creative sense of how to tell lively stories about the power and absurdities of Hollywood, and its fun, is also desired. This position will at times include night, early-morning, and weekend work.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to shape the conversation about culture and the culture industry.
  • Impeccable story judgment.
  • Substantial experience guiding reporters.
  • Desire to tackle the biggest stories and ideas in this world.
  • Fluency in a wide array of related subject areas—technology, business, national politics—and a nuanced understanding of how they interact with the culture industry.

  • A strong interest in ideas-based journalism.

  • Must be based in Los Angeles.
