Senior Editor, Data and Graphics, NBC News Digital
About The Position
NBC News Digital is seeking a Senior Editor to lead its data and visual journalism efforts. This role involves directing data-forward journalism and its creative presentation across digital platforms, including data collection, refinement, and analysis. The Senior Editor will collaborate with various stakeholders within the digital team and across NBC News, such as the Director of Data and Election Experiences, the Senior Director of AI and Emerging Technologies, the Director of Art & Photography, product and engineering leads, and forensic producers and journalists. This position reports to the Senior Executive Editor of NBC News Digital and will focus on editorial goals, managing the Data Graphics team and their career development, staying updated on journalism tools, and fostering partnerships for key projects.
Requirements
- Experience with data analysis tools (Python, Pandas, R).
- Experience with RAG pipelines or LLM-based agents and workflows.
- Experience with data visualization tools (Datawrapper, D3).
- Experience packing tools for non-technical users.
- 10 or more years of experience in data journalism.
- Experience working with AI in journalism.
- Ability to manage staff effectively and focus on staff career development.
- Collaborative nature and ability to align on priorities with outside stakeholders.
- A clear and effective communicator.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with Geospatial analysis and visualization (GeoJSON, Mapbox, QGIS).
- Knowledge of how to utilize AI in editorial work, and how to use the technology to be efficient and keep the team competitively advantaged.
- Editorially rigorous, upholding the highest journalistic standards.
- Curious, innovative and willing to experiment with new technologies.
- Proficient in data analysis and data visualization.
- Strong understanding of modern LLMs, experience evaluating model output and building or deploying RAG systems.
