Senior Distribution Engineer

Thayer Infrastructure Services (TIS) and its affiliated companies•Indianapolis, IN

About The Position

The Senior Distribution Engineer develops cost-effective conceptual and engineering solutions to upgrade, expand, maintain, and automate overhead and underground power distribution systems for utility clients. The role uses various software systems and construction standards and ensures compliance with client procedures, design standards, state and federal regulations, and safety codes. The engineer works closely with engineers performing transmission and communication design. Work includes engineering calculations such as pole structural analysis, guying, cable pulling, fault currents, protective-device placement, bills of materials, and cost estimates. Assignments may involve travel to project locations for field investigations. The position combines office and field work and may include customer-office visits and other fielding activities on an ad hoc basis. The engineer may oversee and quality-check team design work. Experienced engineers may have opportunities to lead and train other engineers and perform quality assurance and quality control. The work takes place in a fast-paced office environment, with U.S. travel of 5–15% as needed. Work is performed during normal operating hours to meet deadlines, with overtime and weekends as required. Applicants offered employment are subject to a background investigation and drug test, and offers are contingent on successful completion.

Responsibilities

  • Develop design and construction work packages for overhead and underground electrical distribution systems for electric utility customers.
  • Assist with oversight and quality assurance of the team's design work.
  • Review client-provided work and assess scope requirements; interact frequently with customers.
  • Perform engineering calculations, including wood-pole structural analysis, guying, conductor sag and tension recommendations, voltage drop, and flicker.
  • Provide engineering support during construction, including post-construction reviews to confirm applicable engineering and construction standards were met.
  • Conduct root cause analysis of outages and develop mitigation using engineering principles and design.
  • Visit customer offices and participate in fielding activities as needed; conduct field investigations at project locations.
  • Coordinate conflicting utilities and other field engineering design requirements.
