About The Position

The Senior Director of Research in the Department of Population Health Sciences is a doctoral-level staff position that serves as a thought partner to the Department Chair and Vice Chairs on strategic and operational aspects of departmental and institutional research priorities. This includes engaging with a wide range of partners in activities that advance the department’s research mission, including grant writing for large, complex research projects, raising the profile of the department internally and externally, and positioning the department and institution to be a focal point for population health, data science, and related fields. The department is ranked #6 in the country and focuses heavily on AI and data science with deep expertise in biostatistics, economics, epidemiology and informatics. The department also houses one of the largest urban clinical data repositories known as INSIGHT, a unique collaboration of more than 20 medical institutions and organizations, housing data on over 22 million patients with 12 million unique patients eligible for trial enrollment.

Requirements

  • PhD or equivalent (e.g., DrPH, ScD, MD with a master’s degree) in population health sciences or a component discipline such as health informatics and AI, biostatistics, epidemiology, health policy and economics, healthcare delivery science, or comparative effectiveness and outcomes research.
  • Approximately 7 plus years’ experience in administration in an Academic Medical Center or Academic environment, or prior administrative and management experience in a related field.
  • Experience with federal research grants
  • Broad scientific background
  • Previous experience in project conception, organization, oversight, and research collaboration
  • Experience in leveraging budgets, forecasts, and financial plans
  • Proficiency with Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, and Excel), and Mac-based operating systems is required

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with academic research environment is preferred
  • Familiarity with Adobe Acrobat, Dropbox, Google apps, Keynote, Slack, and online calendaring/scheduling systems is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Manages and coordinates numerous highly complex, interdisciplinary, and multi-institutional research programs and teams.
  • Produces new and competing grant applications to government, foundation, and industry sponsors, including responses to large, multicomponent funding opportunities (e.g., center grants).
  • Identifies collaborative funding opportunities and strategically matches them with research programs and faculty within the department and across the institution.
  • Partners with internal and external stakeholders to ensure strategic alignment of departmental research activities through consistent and comprehensive communication.
  • Leads the department in developing scientific collaboration and connection opportunities that advance population health sciences research broadly.
  • Prepares written materials, presentations, and reports summarizing scientific contributions for diverse audiences, including corporate and philanthropic development partners.
  • Responds to governmental requests for information (RFIs) and other inquiries related to the department’s research portfolio.
  • Drafts annual and periodic scientific program reports for non-competing renewals of governmental, foundation, and industry-sponsored grants and programs.
  • Assists in researching and drafting substantial sections of invited review articles.
  • Expands research and commercialization opportunities, including vetting and securing new data sources and protecting intellectual property.
  • Works with departmental and institutional finance and grants management teams to develop long-range strategic and operating budgets for the research enterprise.
  • Provides strategic coordination of research staff, identifying opportunities to share skilled staff across programs to reduce duplication and improve communication.
  • Collaborates with institutional leadership to support college-wide research and educational initiatives.
  • Supports faculty nominations to scientific societies and academies, press releases, and limited submission funding opportunities.
