About The Position

The Downtown Oakland YMCA is seeking a Senior Director of Membership and Programs to join a high-performing leadership team at the heart of one of Oakland's most vital community institutions. This role is built for someone who believes that a thriving membership is the engine of community impact — and who brings the energy, creativity, and leadership presence to make it happen. You'll shape critical programs, develop a team that grows under your guidance, and help drive the branch's continued membership and program growth. We're looking for a seasoned professional with a proven track record in membership development and service, program leadership, and staff supervision — ready to bring that experience to bear serving one of Oakland's most vibrant and diverse communities. These general functions will be carried out in keeping with the Goals and Mission of the YMCA of the East Bay. The Senior Director of Membership and Programs is responsible for the planning, management and administration of programs including but not limited to the following: membership, youth sports, and other programming for youth, teens & adults.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in related field or equivalent
  • Five years of youth development experience
  • Two years of sales or customer service experience
  • Two years of supervisory experience
  • Must be self-directed, highly motivated and creative
  • Excellent customer service, problem solving, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Completion of YMCA program-specific and trainer certifications must be accomplished within 60 days of hire
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Outlook and other computer programs necessary to perform the duties of the job
  • Sufficient strength, agility and mobility to perform essential functions of position and to supervise program activities

Responsibilities

  • Develop, lead, and direct assigned programs that meet Association standards and promote growing member participation and retention. Develop innovative programs to meet changing demands, standards, and target groups. Ensure programs are high quality, well-organized, and consistent with YMCA values and standards. Promote programs through internal communications, internal promotions, and coordination with branch/association external marketing.
  • Recruit, hire, train, develop, motivate, schedule and direct staff and volunteers as needed. Monitor and evaluate staff performance.
  • Be an advocate and key leader for exceptional customer service and communication in the branch.
  • Effectively resolve member questions and complaints.
  • Prepare and manage annual budget for assigned program areas and meet or exceed financial objectives.
  • Ensure program areas and equipment are maintained in an orderly and safe manner, according to Association standards. Support maintenance and repair of facilities and equipment as required.
  • Provide assistance in fund raising for the Annual Branch Support Campaign.
  • Attend appropriate trainings and meetings to enhance knowledge and bring new and innovative programs to the YMCA.
  • Serve as a member of the branch leadership team.
  • Special projects and other duties as assigned.
