About The Position

The Senior Director of Medical Services (SDM) provides operational and clinical leadership for Whitman-Walker Health’s medical services. The SDM ensures that care delivery aligns with clear clinical standards, quality improvement goals and metrics, and organizational priorities. The SDM will support Population Health and Quality activities, value-based performance measures and other clinical quality goals by translating quality into clinical practice change through provider engagement, training, and operational alignment, including leveraging the electronic medical record (Epic) to standardize clinical workflows, support clinical decision-making, and embed quality and operational processes into routine care delivery. The SDM will also ensure that care is provided with excellent customer service and operational standards, with the focus that every patient encounter is an opportunity for both the patient and the care team to achieve balance. They will develop clinical standards of care in collaboration with the Site Medical Directors and the SMART Clinic leader for approval by the Chief Health Officer. They will be the medical leader for Whitman-Walker Health’s value-based pay work and a champion for translating quality improvement activities into action. They will ensure the medical practice areas understand the variety of patient and community programming across Whitman-Walker Health to ensure all provides are well trained on the integrated model of care and that all patients have access to all services that they may benefit from and to support harmony across care teams. They will also provide direct patient care up to two clinical sessions per week.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and contractual requirements.
  • Knowledge and experience in clinical research programs.
  • Excellent knowledge of electronic medical records, medical billing, coding and insurance coverage.
  • High energy level, strong work ethic, and proactive problem-solving skills.
  • Leads by example: demonstrating appreciation of health center values and community orientation.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to relate well to a variety of individuals and has a track record of being a team player.
  • Ability to work collaboratively internally and externally.
  • Ability to adapt to an ever-changing environment.
  • MD or DO from an accredited school
  • Ability to be licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia
  • Maintains active Board Certification in their field of expertise
  • At least 10 (ten) years of clinical practice
  • At least 15 years proven experience in primary care, HIV care and clinical expertise in LGBTQ health.
  • Leadership and managerial expertise with at least eight (8) years actively managing medical programs.

Responsibilities

  • Mentor, support and develop medical team members.
  • Partner with Medical Site Directors and SMART Clinic Manager to recruit, train, and retain high-performing clinical staff, ensuring a workforce committed to exceptional patient experience and quality care.
  • Serve as an internal champion for organizational culture, driving initiatives that promote equity, inclusion, and our mission-driven work environment.
  • Reduce clinical variation by standardizing protocols and documentation across all sites; continuously evaluate and refine operational processes to support high-quality, efficient care delivery.
  • Develop and enforce evidence-based clinical standards that drive provider education, operational alignment, and continuous quality improvement (CQI).
  • Ensure seamless integration between medical, nursing, and other departments to optimize the integrated whole-person model of care.
  • Oversee comprehensive medical staff training, ensuring all providers are equipped to deliver integrated services that align with broader organizational goals, utilizing their talents and interests to also drive education.
  • Act as a clinical data leader by leveraging Epic to embed standardized documentation, order sets, and clinical decision support into routine workflows.
  • Enhance organizational performance in value-based models by aligning clinical documentation and provider training with quality metrics and reimbursement requirements.
  • Collaborate with the CHO, COO, and VP of Population Health to operationalize changes in healthcare delivery, focusing on safety, patient revenue goals, and productivity efficiencies.
  • Maintain clinical expertise and practice standards by providing primary medical care for up to two clinical sessions per week.
  • Serve as a key organizational representative to external partners, stakeholders, and professional bodies as required.
  • Participates in management meetings to act upon a variety of matters including personnel matters and provides updates and reports as requested
  • Supporting management in fact finding efforts concerning managerial actions or union grievance processing
  • Reviews and makes recommendations for changes to collective bargaining agreements and the Employee Handbook to ensure ongoing compliance
