About The Position

United Way of Southwestern Pennsylvania (United Way) mobilizes philanthropy, policy, and partnerships to solve the most pressing challenges facing our region. By bringing together corporate leaders, volunteers, nonprofit partners, and individual donors, United Way drives measurable, lasting community impact. Reporting to the Executive Vice President & Chief Development Officer, the Senior Director of Major Gifts provides strategic leadership and day‑to‑day management for United Way's three premier affinity‑based major donor programs: Tocqueville Society, Bridges Society and Women United. This role is responsible for the growth, direction, and performance of these critical major gift programs, overseeing high‑level donor engagement strategies, volunteer leadership, and frontline fundraising staff. The Director builds and manages a personal portfolio of major donors and prospects while leading development officers and volunteers to achieve ambitious fundraising and membership goals. This individual plays a critical role in expanding United Way's major donor base and strengthening long‑term philanthropic relationships across the region.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Eight to ten years of successful individual and/or major gifts fundraising
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff and volunteer leaders

Nice To Haves

  • Experience directing and leading affinity-based, leadership-level or major donors' programs
  • Progressive development nonprofit or mission-driven organization experience
  • An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered in lieu of education.
