About The Position

San Diego Humane Society is hiring a Senior Director of Philanthropy and Gift Planning! Estate gifts represent a significant source of funding for the organization and play a critical role in its comprehensive campaign — More Humane: The Campaign for Animals — and its efforts to raise $200M. In this role, you’ll be responsible for developing sustainable, impactful donor relationships and ensuring fundraising success through a focus on donor engagement and fundraising, estate administration and marketing of planned giving opportunities. We are seeking candidates who enjoy the technical aspects of gift and estate planning as well as managing an active donor portfolio. This role delivers service at the gold standard level in alignment with the SDHS Way, to meet the needs of animals and the people who love them by leading with compassion, finding creative solutions, providing personalized care and building connections.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with at least seven (7) years successful experience in frontline and/or planned giving fundraising, or as an estate planning attorney; or an equivalent combination of education and experience required
  • Requires significant, demonstrated knowledge of planned giving vehicles, including charitable gift annuities, real estate and other tangible properties, charitable remainder and lead trusts, testamentary trusts, bequests, life insurance policies and retained life estates and demonstrated success in implementing prospect strategies to secure both current and deferred gifts.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be approved by SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.
  • Includes considerable judgment in the preparation, management and development of fundraising proposals.

Nice To Haves

  • Proficiency in planned giving software such as PG Calc or Crescendo is preferred.
  • The ideal candidate will have personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to the SDHS mission – you’re a proactive, hands-on strategic thinker with solid experience administering estates, creating gift opportunities and navigating legal and financial regulations.
  • Other relevant experience should include significant, demonstrated experience working directly with individual donors to develop relationships on behalf of the institution and secure greater levels of generosity.

Responsibilities

  • Act as primary point of contact in working with individuals who indicate an interest in planned giving, either in response to our marketing efforts or other direct response mechanisms, or through individual conversations with Senior Director or other fundraising team members.
  • Develop and implement prospect identification, engagement and solicitation strategies for select group of planned giving donors who are major gift donors/prospects.
  • Maintain regular, effective contact with donors through various activities and communications.
  • Oversee the collection, conservation, administration and allocation of realized testamentary gifts to the organization — e.g. gifts by will or trust, retirement funds, payable on death accounts and life insurance.
  • Monitor administration of trusts and estates to ensure San Diego Humane Society’s interests are protected.
  • Work directly with executors, trustees and other fiduciary/financial custodians, as well as internal organizational partners on a daily basis, to receive the full value of estate gifts in a timely and efficient manner and ensure against mismanagement and waste.
  • Track and monitor open estates and testamentary distributions, and maintain processes and reporting of same, with the goal of providing timely, accurate and transparent information to colleagues, leadership and other stakeholders.
  • Lead multi-channel marketing of planned giving vehicles to donor database and community at-large.
  • Maintain professional development, keep abreast of planned giving trends, opportunities and related legislation, and provide regular updates to colleagues.
