About The Position

Type One Energy is seeking a Senior Director - Balance Of Plant (BOP) Engineering to lead the development and engineered design of all non-fusion related Systems, Structures, and Components (SSCs) for their Infinity One prototype, Infinity Two fusion power plant, and relevant FusionDirect facilities. This role is crucial for ensuring BOP SSCs meet performance, interface, code, regulatory, safety, quality, constructability, and maintainability requirements, all within program schedule and budget objectives. The Senior Director will lead a multidisciplinary team, including internal staff, AECOM partners, and external contractors, and will be the primary interface with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) for BOP design engineering related to the Bull Run site and services.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in an Engineering discipline required
  • Minimum of 15 years of engineering experience in power plant design engineering
  • Minimum of 10 years in engineering leadership roles with multidisciplinary responsibility for technical results, budget and schedule performance
  • Demonstrated and deep experience managing the design of power plant BOP SSCs across all relevant engineering disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical and controls
  • Experience with modular construction techniques
  • Strong knowledge of all power plant BOP SSC design requirements and existing relevant commercial solutions and products
  • Expertise in codes and standards, including ASME, for power generation facilities
  • Exceptional technical leadership, communication, and collaboration skills
  • Ability to lead through ambiguity and develop practical solutions for complex engineering challenges

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree highly preferred
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license is desirable
  • Experience with both nuclear and non-nuclear power plant design preferred

Responsibilities

  • Provide management direction and technical oversight of all Infinity One, Infinity Two, and relevant FusionDirect facility BOP SSC design elements, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and I&C engineering disciplines.
  • Provide management direction and technical oversight for design of relevant SSC in FusionDirect program testing and development facilities.
  • Develop and execute multi‑year BOP design engineering staffing and work execution plans aligned with FusionDirect program milestones, budgets, schedules, and construction plans.
  • Build, mentor, and lead a high‑performing BOP engineering organization, including discipline leads, subject‑matter experts, and external engineering partners.
  • Provide technical oversight and direction to the development of all BOP engineering deliverables for all non-fusion related SSCs for Infinity One, the Infinity Two fusion power plant, and relevant FusionDirect facilities.
  • Ensure all BOP engineering interfaces and SSC requirements remain fully integrated and aligned with the fusion-related SSCs in Infinity One and Infinity Two, working closely with Systems Engineering.
  • Direct development of drawings, specifications, design reports, and technical analyses to support the procurement and manufacturing of BOP SSCs.
  • Develop BOP SSC field assembly plans and procedures, and provide engineering support for construction of the associated elements of Infinity One, the Infinity Two fusion power plant, and relevant FusionDirect facilities.
  • Review and approve technical decisions and designs for all BOP SSCs, including seismic and environmental performance, geotechnical investigations, hydrology, site layout, and modular construction methods for civil-structural aspects.
  • Develop and manage engineering budgets, staffing plans, and schedules for executing BOP engineering responsibilities.
  • Manage and coordinate the work scope assigned to AECOM and other engineering contractors, specialty consultants, and vendors.
  • Support BOP SSC design engineering risk identification, mitigation planning, and change‑management processes.
  • Drive BOP SSC constructability reviews, value engineering, and design‑to‑cost initiatives that also consider safety, performance, and schedule efficiency.
  • Represent the technical and engineering design elements of all BOP SSCs during regulatory meetings, design reviews, and stakeholder engagements.
  • Partner and collaborate with leaders and teams responsible for non-BOP SSCs to ensure seamless, coordinated interface and integration of all SSCs.
  • Partner and collaborate with construction, project controls, procurement, and supply chain organizations to ensure the engineered design of all BOP SSCs supports constructability and maintainability requirements.
