Senior Director of Electrical Engineering
About The Position
The Senior Director of Electrical Engineering guides the engineering team in long-term system technology evaluation and selection and supports collaboration across departments, particularly Preconstruction and Delivery. The role leads and reviews offtake contracts from an engineering perspective, including NTP, Turnkey, and IPP, across the company’s Community Solar (CS), Distributed Generation (DG), and Utility-Scale strategies. This fast-paced, multidisciplinary position calls for broad familiarity with utilities across the United States and a blend of technical expertise, construction experience, administrative capability, and understanding of solar design pricing. The Senior Director primarily collaborates with the Directors of Delivery and Development Engineering and director- and VP-level leaders in other departments.
Requirements
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or an applicable engineering field.
- Advanced engineering experience and a professional license.
- Ability to stamp interconnection and construction sets as needed.
- Successful experience with CS, DG, and utility-scale design cycles from conceptual design through energization.
- Demonstrated experience in transmission-level interconnection design; 345 kV preferred.
- At least 12 years of hands-on professional experience designing PV systems.
- Ability to provide efficient, timely, and reliable deliverables to internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience navigating, interpreting, and applying electrical and building codes.
- Understanding of the greenfield project development process.
- Excellent verbal, written communication, and presentation skills.
- Strong attention to detail and a high level of integrity.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with competing deadlines.
- Excellent understanding of PVSyst.
- Willingness to contribute to a culture based on trust and mutual accountability.
- Practical, hands-on attitude toward getting work done correctly.
- Ability to travel and access sites with varying terrain; must have an active driver’s license and acceptable driving record.
Nice To Haves
- Transmission-level interconnection design experience at 345 kV.
- Ongoing technical knowledge of Solar PV and BESS updates through reading about the latest products, design techniques, and construction strategies.
Responsibilities
- Oversee early-stage pricing efforts in collaboration with the Preconstruction Department.
- Understand monetization paths and acquisition structures to ensure they align with design direction.
- Collaborate with Procurement to identify technology trends and establish an Approved Vendor List (AVL).
- Support the team with internal Delivery DG and LG set reviews.
- Provide senior engineering support for large utility-scale projects, including transmission-level interconnection design up to 345 kV, studies, and utility/ISO coordination.
- Maintain detailed familiarity with utility-scale solar products and specifications.
- Finalize specification revisions for procurement of transformers, inverters, racking, switchgear, communications, and other critical components.
- Interpret NTP, offtake, and IPP contracts and recommend adjustments.
