About The Position

Under general direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, performs advanced diagnostic, maintenance, and repair work on all transit vehicle systems, including gasoline and diesel engines, battery-electric drivetrains, electronically controlled transmissions, 12/24-volt electrical systems, engine and transmission control systems, HVAC systems, brake systems, and related subsystems. Follows the Agency Maintenance Plan to complete A, B, C, and D level preventive maintenance (PM) routines and conducts complex troubleshooting using Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) service information, wiring diagrams, diagnostic workflows, and electronic service tools. Installs, configures, and repairs communications, telematics, camera systems, Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment, Intelligent Transit System (ITS) components, and supports system modifications as needed. Oversees documentation of all inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and parts usage within fleet maintenance software, ensuring accuracy and completeness. Additionally, may serve as a subject matter expert on Greenlink’s Safety Committee. Supports lower level technicians through guidance, safe work practices, and technical recommendations. Progression path: Senior Diesel Mechanic ? Shop Foreman. All tools diagnostic equipment, and shop resources are provided. Uniforms and laundry service, steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, ear plugs (as needed), and gloves are also provided. Eligible for additional OEM and ASE-certifying coursework.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Over four (4) years of experience in hands-on vehicle repair to include at least two (2) years of experience working on transit buses or diesel engines.
• Knowledge of: Electrical systems, air systems, chassis and suspension, HVAC, diesel engines, transmissions, and related vehicle subsystems.
• Advanced failure diagnosis, complex repair procedures, and preventive maintenance practices common to buses and heavy-duty vehicles.
• OEM troubleshooting resources, including interpreting wiring diagrams, diagnostic trees, repair manuals, schematics, and guided diagnostic workflows.
• Diagnostic principles related to interpreting mechanical and electronic interactions among exhaust, cooling, driveline, aftertreatment, fuel, sensor, and control systems.
• Procedures and technical methods used in the testing, repair, and adjustment of radios, communications equipment, telematics systems, and related electronic components.
• Genfare fare collection system operation, service procedures, diagnostics, repair and maintenance requirements.
• ITS architecture, components, communication pathways, and service procedures.
• OSHA and safe working practices, including hazard identification, PPE use, and proactive safety reporting in a maintenance environment.
• Electric vehicle high-voltage power distribution systems, safety protocols, and Arc Flash awareness requirements.
• Proper service documentation requirements, including capturing diagnostic steps, repair actions, parts usage, and system data for accurate maintenance history.
• Ongoing learning practices needed to stay current with evolving technologies, diagnostic software updates, and OEM service procedures.
• Use advanced diagnostic equipment including computers, gauges, multimeters, electronic testers, mechanical measurement devices, and OEM-specific software to evaluate system performance and identify faults.
• Escalate highly complex or unusual issues to the Shop Foreman, Fleet Manager, or OEM technical support when appropriate.
• Operate revenue and non-revenue vehicles safely in and around garage/shop areas and on public roadways.
• Apply independent judgment and make accurate, timely repair decisions to resolve complex technical issues and minimize vehicle downtime.
• Plan, prioritize, and organize work assignments to efficiently complete diagnostic evaluations, inspections, repairs, and documentation tasks.
• Perform detailed mechanical and electrical work requiring precise manual dexterity, fine motor skills, and attention to small components.
• Recognize variations in sound, vibration, temperature, and performance to identify abnormal operating conditions.
• Work collaboratively and effectively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, vendors, and OEM technical representatives while maintaining positive and productive working relationships.
• Read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, service bulletins, OEM troubleshooting guides, wiring diagrams, and diagnostic workflows.
• Write clear and accurate service notes, reports, and emails using proper grammar, spelling, and formatting.
• Perform calculations and apply practical math skills including fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and measurements.
• Adapt to changing work demands, respond to urgent repairs when necessary, and work a flexible schedule that may include nights, weekends, holidays, split shifts, and overtime as needed.
• Document all diagnostic findings, repair actions, and completed work accurately in fleet maintenance software.
• Safely and effectively use a full range of shop tools and equipment including hand tools, diagnostic instruments, electrical and pneumatic tools, A/C recovery equipment, forklifts, grinders, calipers, micrometers, drill presses, and hydraulic presses.
• Utilize specialized diagnostic and software systems including Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Proterra Diagnostics, Luminator destination sign software, and related OEM electronic tools.
• Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License at hire.
• Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) with passenger endorsement within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence.
• Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsement within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.
• Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina.
• Employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.

Responsibilities

• Perform complex repairs on gasoline, diesel, and electric vehicles as well as shop and facility equipment, including work on diesel and gasoline engines, electric drive motors, high-voltage vehicle electrical systems, electronically controlled transmissions, ride-height suspension systems, suspension and steering linkages, kingpins, wheel-end components, tires, air brake systems (including ABS), hydraulic brake systems (including ABS), multiplex electrical systems, lighting systems, pneumatic air systems, HVAC systems, fare collection systems, and ITS.
• Follow OEM diagnostic procedures such as wiring diagrams, diagnostic trees, repair and parts manuals, and schematics to perform troubleshooting on vehicles, charging stations, and related equipment.
• Use diagnostic software (including Cummins Insite, Allison DOC, Bendix, Wabco, Proterra Diagnostic, ViriCiti, Genfare, and ShopKey), multimeters, specialized tools, test gauges, and integrated onboard maintenance systems to identify defects.
• After determining the cause of failure, select the most efficient repair method, complete the repair to OEM specifications, and verify that the vehicle or equipment is safe and operating correctly.
• Actively report any safety concerns encountered during assigned tasks and maintain accurate records of all diagnostic and repair activities in fleet maintenance software.
• Perform A, B, C, and D PM services and safety inspections on gasoline, diesel, and electric buses as well as shop and facility equipment.
• Identify any defects found during inspections and complete required repairs before returning the vehicle to service.
• Complete electronic PM check sheets in fleet maintenance software for each service performed.
• Verify proper system operation and confirm that the vehicle meets all safety and reliability standards prior to release.
• Complete the installation, configuration, troubleshooting, and repair of specialized vehicle systems including cellular data systems and modems, Wi-Fi equipment, emergency lighting, two-way radios, mobile data terminal mounts, fare collection systems, ITS, GPS equipment, body add-ons, and decals.
• Modify or adjust systems as needed to ensure proper function and usability and perform repairs or replacement of components when required.
• Respond to field service calls and assess vehicle and worksite safety upon arrival.
• Perform basic on-site diagnostic checks to determine whether the vehicle can be repaired in the field or requires towing to the shop.
• Conduct essential field repairs such as tire changes, battery replacements, and vehicle jump starts as needed.
• Ensure all actions follow safety guidelines and established procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
